Chief Casey Season 1: Chicago's Newest Chief (Dawsey)

Chapter 11

Matt's POV: After spending the past 2 hours battling the fire as Chief, I sighed when I spoke to the hotel owners. "I promise, we will definitely give you a full report of what we did. The best part is that we rescued 90% of your guests. Let's just hope you can find them places to stay." They agreed and nodded. Going to shake the manager's hand, I watched as Chief Patterson did the same before walking away. "Honest opinion, how was that? Chief-to-Chief." Dallas laughed when I said that. "You were great Matt. I'm impressed." I agreed and smiled. "2nd fire as Chief."

We then both walked away to our jeeps when I saw Hermann walk up to me. "We need to fill up the truck okay Chief?" I then nodded and agreed. "Yeah, go ahead Hermann." Hermann smiled and went to put his hand on my shoulder. "Boden would've been proud that was amazing. You didn't miss a beat." I smiled and nodded as I went to hug him. "Just curious, they did offer you the position right?" Hermann shook his head. "No, you got it first. They wanted you back. They've missed you at the CFD. Wanted to tug you back. Plus, it was Boden's last wish."

I agreed and nodded. "Yeah, that's what convinced me and Gabby to come back. Now listen, we should head back to the house. See you there." That's when I went to get in the Jeep. Checking the time, I saw it was now 4:30. Also known as the kid's pre-supper nap time while Gabby made food. I went to drive away first before going to connect my phone to the Bluetooth. I then went to call Gabby on the phone. Gabby then went to answer right away. "Hey, how's it going?" I laughed. "Just finished a fire downtown. I am going to be driving past the house in the jeep. But, I am not getting out. I just knew the kids were asleep right now and wanted to call quickly."

Gabby agreed. "You guys have had a busy day so far Chief." I agreed and smiled. "You do realize I don't expect you to call me that when we are on shift. You are my wife, you get to call me Matt. Heck, I am still having trouble being called Chief. I still associate that name with Boden. Thinking of asking the CFD if we could put Boden's name on Engine 51. You know, like we did with Shay's name and Ambo 61?" Gabby liked the sound of that. "Let me draft the proposal." I then shook my head. "Gabby, you don't have to do that." She sighed. "Matt, let me do something. I am bored here with just me and the kids. Heck, I wish you could come and sleep here for a bit."

I agreed and sighed. "Believe me, I want nothing more than to share a bed with you tonight. But, in the morning okay? I'll swing by, pick Matteo up and drive him to daycare. Then it can be me, you and Ella in bed for a while." Gabby sighed. "We really going to put him in daycare during the day?" I agreed. "Gabby, he needs to make friends. He's back at the new All-Star Kids Academy. Allison and Lindsay are excited to see him again." Gabby sighed when I asked him that. "Matt, we have my mom here. He's fine at home for a while okay?" I agreed and sighed. "Okay."

That's when I heard Hermann speak to me over the Radio. "Hey Chief, we are having trouble with traffic. We might be a bit late." I sighed and agreed. "Okay Hermann. Just keep your radios on. I will try and figure it out with main." Gabby then spoke to me. "How are they having trouble with traffic if you're on your way back to the house?" I sighed. "They left the truck running. We were there for 2 hours." I then turned to go towards the house. "So, the gas needed to be topped up." Gabby understood. "I remember the traffic, horrible." I laughed and agreed with her. "Listen, you should drop by later when the kids are asleep. I left my sweats there anyways." 

That's when I heard Matteo come into the room. "Mommy, I think I made a mess in my pants." I then sighed when I heard that. "Gabby, get your mom to take care of it. You just gave birth 3 weeks ago. That's why you're mom is there." Gabby just sighed when I said that. "Matteo, can you get your grandma to do it? Then put your PJs on. You can cuddle with me, Ella and Wally after." I smiled when she said that when I went to park in front of the firehouse. "You in bed with our 2 little ones?" Gabby laughed and agreed as I went to grab my phone. I then FaceTimed her.

Gabby went to pick up right away and smiled. "Hey. So, where are my 2 little ones?" Gabby then showed me Wally who was currently being breastfed with her not wearing anything other than a sweater on top of her. I then shook my head and stared at her. "You Mrs. PIC Dawson or is it going to be Casey at work?" Gabby smiled when I asked. "Dawson. You need to be Casey since you are Chief." I agreed and smiled at her, really admiring her body. "You sure you can't come spend the night here tonight? Just me, you and Wally?" Gabby shook her head. "I'm busy."

I was confused. "With what?" Gabby smiled. "Stella is coming over and staying the night with Stephen." I agreed and smiled. "Then forget about coming. I'll get Severide to give me a ride in the morning then. I want him to spend a bit of time with Wally." Gabby smiled and agreed. "Go ask him. You're back at work so, go get your reports done. I need to go eat when I am done. Then, I am doing reading with Matteo in Spanish. But tonight, we can talk again." I nodded and agreed. "I'll talk to Severide. I love you Gabby. Talk later." Gabby agreed and smiled.

I then went to hang up and took a deep breath before going to get out of the Jeep. Walking out, I saw Squad was already back and just parking in the garage. Getting my radio and jacket, I then went to walk back in when I saw Severide. "Severide, can I speak with you?" Severide then turned to look at me. "Who am I speaking to first? My chief or my best friend?" I laughed and looked at him. "Depends, who do you want to talk to right now?" He just shook his head. "What do you need Matt?" I smiled at him. "A ride home in the morning."

He was confused. "Gabby's not coming?" I laughed. "No, she's having Stella over and staying the night with Stephen apparently." Severide nodded and agreed as we walked in together. "Then sure thing, you can get a ride. However...when shift is over, you go back to being my best friend and not my chief." I smiled and agreed with him. "Of course. Now, I want to talk to you about your wedding tomorrow or sometime. I want to know how it went." Severide laughed and agreed. "Want to grab some supper together in your office?" I smiled and nodded.

"Sure, that sounds great. I want to see more pictures of Stephen anyways. And you can see pictures of my kids." He agreed and smiled. "Then let's get the candidate to make food." We both agreed and nodded as we made our way into the firehouse together.
