Chapter 166

Matt's POV:
After making our way to the kitchen and grabbing some breakfast, I smiled as I bent down and kissed Matteo's head before setting next to him. "Hey bud, what you doing?" Matteo then turned to look at me. "Coloring." I then saw it was the newspaper crossword page. "Uhm mom, you might need to go buy a new paper today." My mom then walked over and looked at Matteo. "You are lucky you are cute mister. You just ruined my crossword." I laughed and smiled at her. "Hey mom, can I ask you something?" My mom then nodded. "Yeah, of course." I then sighed as I took a bite of my food. "How are you being here? No emotional problems when it comes to the bad stuff that happened here?"

Matteo then looked up at me. "Daddy, what kind of bad stuff happened here?" I then bit my lip and looked at Gabby before being honest with him. "Matteo, you know what's good and bad right?" Matteo nodded. "And what's hitting and yelling at somebody?" Matteo then looked at me. "Bad." I nodded. "Well, your grandpa was a bad guy sometimes towards me and your grandma." I then went to grab his hand and smiled. "It's why I am such a good daddy to you. I don't want you to ever experience what I experienced." Gabby then looked at me and smiled. "Believe me Matt, I know you couldn't ever do it." I smiled and nodded.

Looking at my plate, I then went to take the last few bites before smiling at my mom. "Hey mom, do you mind if I get changed here in the washroom? Might be easier than at the firehouse. Just didn't want to be so formal at breakfast. That way Matteo was okay with being funny with me." I then went to tickle him. Matteo smiled when I did that. "Daddy, stop!" I then smiled and got up, kissing his head before carrying my plate to the sink. "You okay with me getting changed Gabby?" Gabby then looked at me. "Sure, that makes much more sense. But then, we need to go right?" I then checked the time. "In 20 minutes. Sorry mom, I need to be there on time."

My mom then looked at me. "Matt, I am just glad you guys came. I wasn't sure if you would even want to walk in when you saw the address. I understand if you want to just meet at your place form now on. It's just...this place is different for me. I can look past the abuse because this is where I raised my family. I look on the bright side." I sighed and nodded while going to grab her hand. "I will try mom. Maybe it's just because it was the first time being here. Now Gabby, please don't ask about what happened. I want to tell you myself. And nod in front of the kids. That's too much for them. I don't want them thinking bad about their grandfather."

Gabby nodded and agreed. "Hey, you do the same when it comes to my dad and you are not the biggest fan of his. So, I promise to do the same." I smiled and agreed before going to grab my keys. "My bag is outside. I just need to grab it and then I am going to run upstairs to get changed." Gabby then looked at me. "Then Matt, can you grab Matteo's bag and put it in the van while you're out there? That way it's out there." I agreed. "Of course. Now, just get him to finish eating. We leave in 20." Walking out to the car, I smiled as I took a deep breath because I felt a bit relieved that I was no longer in the house.

Gabby's POV:
Once Matt left the house, I could tell that he was really relieved. "Hey Matteo, can you thank your grandma for watching you last night?" Matteo then turned to look at Nancy and smiled. "Thanks for watching me last night grandma." Nancy smiled and went to sit in front of me. "It was fun Matteo, I am glad you stayed." She then went to kiss his head. "Listen, I am sorry if this brings up bad emotions for Matt. I just hope he can grow to like the place again?" I then sighed. "We'll try our best okay? Just give us time. It's his first time here in a while."

Nancy nodded and agreed. "So, how are you doing Gabby? Good recovery?" I laughed and agreed as we started to talk about my post-birth recovery and everything we experienced in Puerto Rico.
