Chapter 37

Matt's POV: After talking to Will, I smiled when I came to join Gabby in the booth. Sitting next to her instead of in front of her, I went to wrap my arm around her and smiled when I saw that she was looking at the baby monitor on her phone. Gabby seemed to be surprised that I just joined her and went to hide her phone. I then stopped her and went to look at Ella in her crib. "She's a good sleeper that little girl of ours." Gabby smiled and nodded. "You aren't mad I took a peek?"

I turned to look at her and shook my head. "Of course not Gabby. I know that you are always worried when we go out. So, if this calms you down then I am all for using this on our dates. It's why we have the system installed. Now, how about we check on Wally?" I then went to change to the other camera and I saw that he was yawning and stretching. "God, he is tired." Gabby smiled and nodded. "After supper, can we just cuddle in bed?" I nodded and went to kiss her forehead. "Anything for you. Plus, I wouldn't mind holding you in my arms for a bit. Day in bed tomorrow?"

Gabby nodded and smiled when I said that. "Yes please. I like the idea of having your arms around me all day. But, didn't you say that you have to go to the academy in the morning?" I sighed and nodded. "If you want to come with me, you can. Then, we can go see Boden, Shay and Ottis' badges?" Gabby thought about it and shook her head. "I am not ready yet. It's already hard enough to know Shay will never meet our kids. But Boden never meeting our last 2 is hard. But you know that just because it's hard...that doesn't mean I am not proud that you are chief."

I smiled when she said that before putting my hand on her leg. I then went to kiss the top of her head. I then kissed Gabby softly and smiled at her. "And I am proud of you too Gabby. How you have dealt with all this. You grieving, being the rock I need and being my biggest fan to do this...you are the only reason I am actually able to do this. Gabby, had you told me you wanted to stay in Puerto Rico...you know I would've stayed right? Boden's will be damned. You are my wife and that means more to me than honoring Boden's wishes. I want you more than this job."

Gabby smiled when I said that when I heard Hermann walk over to us. "It's true Gabby. I am sure that Matt will gladly quit this job if you ask him too." I laughed and looked at him. "Let me guess, you are going to beg for the job the minute I quit...I mean if it happened?" Hermann shook his head. "Not a chance. Last time I checked, that would mean I have to stay longer. By the way, what's this I heard about us possibly getting a second Captain? Severide reached out to me about how the Captain exam was." I nodded and smiled at him. "Yeah, I asked him to take it."

Hermann then looked at me. "Are you not satisfied with my work as Captain? If you want me to hand in my resignation, I will do it Chief." I then shook my head. "No! Hermann. Please, just listen. It's solely because of what happened on the last call we had with Patterson. He outranked Kelly. And I had no choice but to listen to him before my Lieutenant. I didn't want that to happen again. If they are on the same footing...then I can take his recommendations more often. I can't do that when he is outranked by a captain. Hermann, it's nothing to do with you...I promise."

Hermann let out a sigh of relief and nodded. "I am glad. Sorry, I got worried." I nodded and then got up to go hug him. "Hermann, I am not letting you go. Hermann, you have a home at Firehouse 51 until you decide to retire. Plus, we both know that you want to be with Lee Henry for a little bit." Hermann smiled. "By the way, thank you so much for getting that done. We are so thrilled that he is going to work for us." I nodded and smiled. "Can you get him to come in on his next day off? I want to personally congratulate him." Hermann smiled. "He's outback."

I then remembered that he worked here. "I would love to say congrats to him but, I am on a quick date. If he comes out here, can I talk to him quick Gabby?" Gabby nodded and smiled. "Hermann, get Lee Henry to bring us out supper out. Give us 10 minutes to eat the salad and then we can eat the meal okay?" Hermann nodded and agreed. I then remembered something. "Actually Hermann, can you meet me at the academy tomorrow morning at 10?" Hermann was confused. "Why?" I smiled at him. "I got invited to speak to the candidates. And I am going to go do some scouting. What do you say you come along and we can look at the candidates together? I want to start looking so I can make a ranking for when we get to pick our candidates."

Hermann nodded and agreed. "Sure, I have to drop Lee Henry off in the morning. Maybe you can watch one of his classes?" I smiled and agreed. "I would love to. Can you take care of his uniform stuff though?" Hermann nodded and agreed. "Lee Henry will be out in 10 with your food. And I promise, he's learning to cook food from here." I nodded and agreed, ready to see my candidate. Gabby then turned to look at me. "So much for no chief work." I looked at her. "Sorry, just wanted to congratulate him in person. I promise, that's it." Gabby smiled and nodded. "You can make it up to me later with a nice massage in bed." I smiled and agreed, kissing her softly before starting to eat supper with her.
