A Leap of Faith (Part 2)

Chapter 276 - Kara's Childhood Story

Back in Kara and Lena's home, Lillian and Lena are just about ready to preform a test on Nia, to help her figure out about her powers, and how to control them. The mother and daughter have come up with a plan where they will have J'onn link his mind with Nia's, and then have Nia fall asleep. While this happens, Lena and Lillian will be monitoring Nia's brainwaves, with a bunch of equipment they will attach to Nia's head, and at the same time they hope that J'onn will be able to guide Nia through the dream, and report back to them as to what is happening. Then, in the worst-case scenario, J'onn will hopefully be able to pull Nia out of her dream, and wake her up, if she is unable to wake herself, like she described happened to her previously. Of course, this doesn't tackle Nia's other powers, including the light beams that the young woman can now emit from her hands, however, Lena and Lillian both think that the key to Nia's powers may very well just lie in her dreams, so if she can have control over her dreams, or at the very least, understand her dreaming powers better, then she will hopefully have more control over her other powers. This, of course, presumes that all of Nia's powers are connected.

"Okay, Nia, do you think you know how to use some of the mental techniques J'onn has taught you?" Kara asks.

"Yeah..... I think so..." Nia replies, a bit nervously.

"Okay. Let's go over to Lena and Lillian, they are ready for us." Kara says.

"Okay." Nia nods.

Kara, Nia and J'onn all then walk over to Lillian and Lena, who have now set up two mobile beds, along with a bunch of monitoring equipment beside one of them.

"Nia says she's ready. Have you both agreed on a plan?" Kara asks.

"Yes." Lena nods, and then proceeds to describe what she and Lillian want to do with Nia, while she dreams.

"I can't be sure if I will be able to keep the connection with Nia for long after she falls asleep." J'onn says.

"Yes, I understand that." Lena nods, "But we will still get useful data, even just from monitoring Nia's brainwaves while she is asleep. Our hope is you being connected can sort of be a failsafe, as a way to end Nia's dream if she can't wake up, and also hopefully give us some further insight."

"Alright Nia, how does that all sound? Are you okay with it all?" Kara asks, wanting to make sure Nia is comfortable with all this, as after all, that is the most important thing. The last thing they all want is for Nia to be extremely uncomfortable, and that to negatively effect the tests and everything.

"Yeah..... I think so....." Nia says, and then looks directly at Kara, "You'll stay the whole time I'm sleeping, right?"

"Of course I will." Kara replies.

"We all will." Lena says.

"Okay." Nia says, nodding her head, after taking a deep breath, "I think I'm ready."

"Good." Lillian says, "If you and J'onn would just lie down on these two beds, Lena and I can begin putting the monitoring devices on you."

Nia nods her head once more, and lays down on the bed, with J'onn doing the same. Lena and Lillian then begin to attach the devices to Nia. This includes Lena putting a heart rate monitoring device on one of Nia's fingers, while Lillian places a few devices on Nia's forehead, that look like suction cups with wires attached to them. Once Lillian and Lena do this, they each turn around and start to turn on the machines which the devices are attached to, just so they can be sure they are actually getting readings from them. Even though J'onn will be linking his mind with Nia's, Lillian and Lena see no need to monitor J'onn's brainwaves as well. This is on top of the fact that monitoring J'onn's brainwaves are probably not going to be very helpful, even in comparison, simply because Nia is half human, half Naltorian, while J'onn is a Martian, so they have completely different biological make ups, and therefore likely will have different biological responses to various things.
