Request - I was hoping you could do a part two of Where Have You Been. Maybe a bit further on where the reader is at the ranch to spend time with Kayce for the first time since moving back and Johns happy to see her. John could comment she's who he thought Kayce was always meant to be with.
You saw Kayce come down from the porch when you got out of your car. You were back on the Dutton Ranch. This time, for a job interview with John about being the family physician for the Duttons and everyone they employed at the ranch.
"Hey," You smiled at Kayce.
"Morning," Kayce nodded his hands in his pockets. "It's good to see you again."
"Well," You pulled your jacket tighter around you. "I'm officially a doctor now so I'm going to need a job to help pay off my school loans...and your father has the biggest ranch in Montana."
"So, you're here for him," Kayce smirked.
"This time? Yeah," You laughed. "Cause we both know your ass ain't in charge here."
"Nope," Kayce gave you a smug expression.
You smiled at him for a second before you stepped closer, wrapping your arms around his middle and hugging him tight. Kayce's arms pulled you closer, his nose resting against your shoulder. For a few seconds, you two just stood there in each other's arms.
"How are you?" You pulled back.
"Surviving?" Kayce shrugged.
The two of you had stuck up another friendship since you saw him for Lee's funeral. Even though you still had school, you made an effort with Kayce, and you could tell he was doing the same with you. You could probably count on one hand the number of days that passed when you didn't talk to him on the phone.
"Well, hopefully, I can say that I'll be here to help you now," You smiled. "After I talk with your dad."
"Good luck?" Kayce offered.
"I'll come find you when I'm done?" You asked.
"I'll be at the barn," Kayce nodded and walked off.
You went inside the main lodge and found John in the living room. He had a cup of coffee on the table beside him while he looked over the paper. When you cleared your throat, he looked up.
"Y/N," John rose.
"Hi Mr. Dutton," You walked inside the room.
"John is fine, Y/N," John held out his hand for you to shake. "Sit down, would you like some coffee?"
"I'm good, but thank you," You said, having a seat.
"So...you're a doctor now?" John took his original seat.
"Licensed to practice family medicine with a specialty in rural communicative diseases," You nodded your head.
"Just what a ranch needs," John nodded.
"I heard you might be looking," You rubbed your hands together. "I know I'm young and fresh out of school...but the typical injuries on a ranch tend to be the basics of what we learned when we were in medical school even."
"Even this ranch?" John raised an eyebrow.
"I did four years of residency just for a place like this," You smiled.
"This place, and I know you know this Y/N...probably better than most," John sighed. "But there will be times I need you to do things, no questions asked."
"Such as?" You asked.
"Anything you could think of and probably some you couldn't," John chuckled. "But I need loyalty. I need full autonomy...and I need you on call twenty-four seven."
