Flashback to when teenager kayce and reader are learning how to drive and reader drives in the lake and rip, llyod, john dutton and kayce was there and they all laugh about it still.
You walked down the next aisle, your eyes glancing around at the little boys' jackets. It was getting colder and while you weren't a mother yourself, you knew little boys grew enough from the pervious year they needed bigger jackets. Sure, Tate's mother could be doing this, but it was now mid-November and Tate was still in the tan jacket from last year. You could see his wrists when he wore it, so you knew it was too small.
You stopped when you saw one that was similar to Kayce's and picked it off the rack. Holding it up you figured it was a good size for Tate. It might be a bit too big, but then he could grow into it more. You placed it in your cart and pushed it along. You walked down the Christmas aisle next, smiling at the lights and ribbons. The holidays were your favorite time of the year. You were looking at a snowman when your phone buzzed in your back pocket. Pulling it out, you saw Kayce calling you.
"Hey," You answered.
"Where are you?" Kayce asked.
"Hello to you too, cowboy," You giggled. "I'm at the store."
"What store?" Kayce asked.
"I'm shopping in town, why?" You stopped walking.
"It's snowing, Y/N," Kayce said.
"Okay?" You started to make your way toward the front.
"On top of our already six inches," Kayce sounded tired over the phone.
"Well, I'm about to check out..." You trailed off when you saw outside.
It had snowed another six inches while you were at the store. You thought the weather said it wouldn't start until this evening, but clearly that wasn't the case. Blinking a few times, you got a little nervous about driving back to the ranch by yourself. You weren't in one of the trucks, just your little car.
"I'm coming to get you," Kayce said as if reading your mind.
"Kayce, you don't have to," You said but hear his truck start.
"I know you don't like driving in the snow," Kayce said, and you heard his phone switch to his truck.
"Thank you," You smiled. "I'll check out and watch for you."
"See you in fifteen," Kayce hung up.
**
You quickly walked out and got into Kayce's truck when you saw him pull up in front of the store. Your shopping bag was shoved at your feet as you buckled up. The wind was icy cold outside, making the snow almost float across the road in front of you as Kayce pulled out of the parking lot.
"Thank you," You told him again.
"The hell did you need right now from the store?" Kayce laughed, glancing at your bag.
"Um..." You looked at the back and then back up at your boyfriend. "I just got some things."
"What things?" Kayce wasn't letting this up.
"Fine," You reached down and pulled out Tate's new jacket. "I got this for Tate...I know you're gonna say he doesn't need it but his current coat is too short in the arms and it's cold, clearly, and it wasn't expensive so I just thought I'd grab it."
Kayce pulled up to a red light and looked over at you.
"You bought Tate a new jacket?" He asked you.
"It's cold, Kayce," You told him. "And I can do this...it's not a big deal."
"It's a big deal, baby," Kayce told you softly. "You didn't need to buy him that but thank you for thinking of my boy like you did."
"Well, I could have picked a better day," Your eyes glanced out the window.
"Yeah," Kayce pressed the gas when the light turned green. "Also, let me know when you're leaving the ranch, huh?"
"Am I your captive or something?" You laughed at him.
"No...but remember when you drove one of the ranch trucks in to the lake that one time?" Kayce smirked.
"I was sixteen!" You defended. "And I didn't know the land yet...plus, your ass was being mean, and I wanted to get away from your temper."
"My ass was being mean because you let Bobby Glossip break up with you for the third time," Kayce laughed.
"Well, sorry you couldn't swallow your pride and ask me out back then like you wanted to," You pushed Kayce's shoulder. "God, I remember that day...your poor father looked like he almost had a heart attack."
"Think he might have," Kayce said, pulling onto the highway. "Had anything happened to you."
"And Rip was who pulled me out of the river," You shivered at the thought. "Not sure I ever actually thanked him."
"I'm the one who found you," Kaye mumbled.
"I remember you yelling at me while Lloyd wrapped me in a blanket," You smiled.
"Scared the shit out of me," Kayce glanced at you.
"But you found me," You told him. "Just like today...always my hero."
Kayce rolled his eyes at you, knowing you were still slightly joking with him. You unclicked your seatbelt and quickly leaned across the console, kissing Kayce's cheek before settling back in your seat.
Kayce pulled up to the main lodge when he got back and you looked over at him confused.
"Tate's here," Kayce said. "Figured you'd want to give him that."
"Oh," You grabbed the bag. "Great!"
The two of you walked in and after hanging up your coats and leaving your boots by the door you walked into the living room to see John and Tate sitting by the fire.
"Glad he found you," John said, looked at you above his reading glasses.
"I've learned my lesson," You smiled and walked around to sit by Tate. "Hey, buddy."
"Hey," Tate looked at the bag in your hand. "What's that?"
"Saw this at the store and thought you might like it for the colder weather we'll have now for a while?" You handed him the bag.
Tate smiled as he opened the bag and pulled out the jacket. He stood up and he held up the jacket.
"Nice," Tate said. "Dad, it looks like yours!"
"What do you say, buddy?" Kayce walked over and sat down next to you.
"Thanks, Y/N," Tate leaned over and hugged you.
"You're welcome," You squeezed him back before Tate ran off to try it on.
You leaned back into Kayce who wrapped an arm around you. His lips brushed against your ear as you started to get warm with the fire. John quietly got up and walked off to help Tate.
"Thank you," Kaye whispered to you.
"No thanks needed," You looked at Kayce and smiled.
Kayce's lips pressed into yours gently.
