Request - Can you do one based on last nights episode? But Kayce comes home to the reader and kids and has to explain what happened to his dad??
Author's Note - did a little altering, but I think it'll be good!
"What's for supper?" Tate asked as he walked into the kitchen area.
"I was thinking some pork chops," You looked over your shoulder. "Some green beans and I've got the last tomatoes of the summer I can fry up."
"Sounds good," Tate leaned down as your four-year-old ran up to him. "Hey, Daisy."
"Momma's making pork chops," Daisy smiled at her brother.
"Where's Dad?" Tate asked.
"He was on his way home when I was talking to him," You finished slicing your tomatoes. "But Beth called him."
"Auntie B?" Daisy asked.
"That's right," You smiled at her. "He'll be home soon."
**
Three hours later you closed Daisy's door behind you. She had finally gone to sleep and you were tired of putting on a fake smile, even if it was for your daughter and her protection for now. Walking back into the living room, Tate was sitting on one of the chairs. He stood up as you came in.
"I still haven't heard from him," You told him.
"I hate that you won't tell me," Tate sat back down.
You frowned and walked over to him, kneeling. Taking a shaky breath, you rubbed up and down Tate's arm.
You felt funny when Kayce still hadn't made it home after hanging up with you more than an hour ago. But it was the phone call from Rip that sent your heart into your stomach. You then got texts and calls from a bunch of people. Finally, Kayce's name came up on your phone and you got to say three words to him before Beth was yelling in his truck about pulling over. That was another hour ago.
"Where is he?" Tate asked.
"He'll be here," You reassured him. "He's just...he's got a lot right now, Tate. Okay?"
"You know something," Tate looked at you. "Something bad happened and you're not telling me what."
"And I promise to tell you everything," You stood up slowly. "We both will, but I need your dad here with me for this."
You walked slowly to the front window and saw Kayce's truck headed your way. You opened the door, shutting it before Tate could say something to you, and walked down the steps.
You met Kayce's truck as he parked next to yours. As he stepped out, it was like seeing a shell of Kayce. His eyes were dull, pain written all over his face as he shut his door. The reality of the words you had heard for the past few hours all came sinking down at once.
You didn't know what to do. Kayce walked up to you and wrapped his arms around you. You held onto him, letting him burrow into your neck. Behind his shoulder, you saw the last of the sunset sinking below the horizon. The cooler air brushed the part of your face exposed from Kayce. He wasn't crying, but he was too still for you to be okay.
Pulling back slowly, you looked up at him. His eyes told you everything you needed to know for the moment. Reaching up, you held the side of his face.
"Oh, baby," You whispered. "I'm so sorry."
Kayce took a shaky breath as his eyes looked around you for a second. You let your hand move so both of them were holding onto his jacket. Kayce cleared his throat.
