Request - Y/N gets diagnosed with some type of sickness and is not doing well at all, and it just shows the strength of her and Kayce stands by her side and help her fight it.
You were finally able to shut your car door and breathe. For the past three months or so you had developed some sort of tingling in your left leg and arm. It would come and go, but the past week seemed to bring it out more. You were also exhausted, more so than normal. It took Kayce seeing you almost fall twice for him to push you to see someone.
You first went to the clinic and when they didn't know, you ventured to the medical center in Darby. But that turned up empty too...but they were concerned enough to send you to the Billings Clinic. You drove out there early this morning and had been there for six hours. They ran blood tests and screenings and finally diagnosed you with Guillain-Barre syndrome.
The last hour or so had been you sitting and learning about this autoimmune disease you had probably had since you were younger, but it just now was coming up. There wasn't a "cure" per say, but there was solid treatment plans you could get on and after a few tries, could live as if you never knew you had it. But the treatments were Immunoglobulin therapy, every two weeks for a month. Then it would go to every other week and then once a month. They wanted you to come to Billings for a while to get the treatments so they could monitor you, but after a while could send you to your local clinic.
It wasn't something fatal, but you felt scared for some reason. You also were now hating yourself for telling Kayce he didn't need to come with you. Kayce was insanely busy right now with being Commissioner and the ranch, you didn't want to add to it, but you knew you would the second you called him.
He had already tried to call you twice and sent you a text asking how it was going. Sighing, you pushed his name on your phone and brought it to your ear.
**
You sat at the table with Kayce later that night. Barely touching your dinner, you watched him read over all the document you had brought home with you. For the whole ride home, Kayce stayed on the phone with you, listening to you and telling you he loved you. You even pulled over halfway and cried on the side of the road with Kayce listening.
"It could be something so much worse," You said.
Kayce looked over at you.
"You've said that to me six times," He gave you a small smile. "You don't have to belittle this...you can think this is the worse, baby...you can think whatever you need to."
"It's just a lot of doctor appointments," You leaned on your hand. "And needles."
Kayce reached over and rubbed your thigh as he continued reading. He had been nothing but loving and kind to you today. You had noticed, after you told him your diagnosis, that he went into his military, authority-mode. Asking so many questions, keeping his voice calm and leveled, it made you smile because you knew it meant he cared.
"I'll go with you," Kayce said.
"Hmm?" You had been thinking too hard to hear what he said.
"To your appointments," Kayce looked at you. "I'll go with you."
"It's a lot of driving, Kayce," You shook your head.
"I'm going," Kayce said.
You gave him a sad smile.
"I don't want you to get in trouble for not doing your job," You said.
"You beat everything else," Kayce started to gather up the papers. "We'll go down on Monday so we can be there early on Tuesday for your first appointment."
"It says it can take up to four hours for the IV to be administered," You stood up with him.
"Baby," Kayce cut you off, cupping your cheek. "I'm doing this with you."
You nodded your head, the threat of tears in the corner of your eyes.
**
"Alright, if you'll just lie back here," The nurse helped you get as comfortable as you could in the clinic chair.
You settled back, resting your arm on the armrest. They wheeled over an IV hanging and you turned your head to the right as the nurse started your IV. Kayce's face though came into your view. He was kneeling next to you, and he offered you a small smile. You felt a sense of calm wash over you as he reached over and held onto your arm, his thumb rubbing back and forth over your shirt.
"Alright," The nurse stood up. "We will come check on you here throughout the time...should be around three hours or so."
"Thank you," You said softly.
Kayce stood up and you watched him move the blanket over your legs to cover you up more. He took the chair the nurse had been in and rolled it over to sit down.
"Three hours..." You sighed. "Kayce, what are you gonna do for three hours?"
"This," He smiled. "Do you want some water?"
"Not right now," You smiled. "But thank you."
He only left your side once, to go to the restroom. Kayce sat with you the whole time and the two of you just talked. It had been a long time since you had had three uninterrupted hours with Kayce. It was nice to just be with him, even though you had an IV coming out of you and the chair wasn't the most comfortable place. When the nurse came back in and smiled at you, you knew you were done.
"Okay, you should be good to go," She smiled. "We will see you next week then, alright?"
"Thank you," You pulled your sleeve down and lowered the foot rest on the chair.
"Do I need to watch her for anything?" Kayce asked the nurse as you stood up.
"She should be good," The nurse smiled. "But if you don't feel well or something feels off, straight to the doctor, alright?"
"Yes, ma'am," You nodded.
Kayce wrapped his arm around your waist as the two of you walked out of the hospital doors and over to his truck. He helped you in and shut the door. Once y'all were back on the road home, you leaned against your seat, looking at him.
"What?" Kayce asked.
"Nothing," You smiled. "Just...thank you for being with him."
"Don't need to thank me," Kayce shook his head.
"Yes I do," You nodded. "This isn't something you asked for."
"I asked for you," Kayce said, glancing at you. "And so far, I've gotten everything I've wanted."
You sat there for a moment as he drove.
"I love you," You said softly.
Kayce reached over and held your hand on your thigh.
**
You felt awful. Your whole body was sore and it was hard to move. Your doctors told you there would be days like this, but this was fucking bullshit. You were laying in the bed, having needed to be downstairs in two minutes for Kayce to take you to your next appointment.
Speaking of...you opened your eye hearing him walk in. His boots echoed on the wood floor.
"Hey..." He said softly. "You ready?"
"Can I skip this one?" You know you sounded miserable.
"No, baby," Kayce sat down next to you.
He reached over and brushed your hair back from your face.
"I'm tired of these," Your voice shook. "I'm tired of being stuck with needles and I'm tired of feeling weak."
"You ain't weak," Kayce gave you a sad smile. "You just ain't well, Y/N...but this stuff...this'll make you better."
"When?" You sighed.
"Soon," Kayce leaned so his face was right in front of yours. "Then it'll be me you're budging out of bed."
You opened both eyes and leaned up some.
"Why do you put up with me?" You gave him a hint of a smile.
"Cause I love you," Kayce said without missing a beat.
Your throat tightened some.
"Want me to carry you down?" Kayce asked.
"No," You sat up more, making Kayce lean back. "I need to walk."
"Alright," Kayce stood up and offered you his hand.
You were late to your appointment, but Kayce sat next to you in the clinic while you took your IV that morning. Afterwards, you weren't as sore as you had been.
"Need anything in town?" Kayce asked.
"No," You sighed.
"What do you want?" Kayce glanced at you.
"To go back to sleep," You mumbled.
"You can do that in about seven hours," Kayce chuckled. "How about I drive you up to pasture two and we sit you in some wildflower for a while?"
You looked over at Kayce. He was trying. He was trying so hard for you.
"Okay," You nodded. "That sounds nice."
"Alright," Kayce smiled and you let him think he thought of something to make you feel better.
When he pulled up to the house to grab things he looked at you.
"Come on," Kayce sighed.
"What?" You asked him.
"Let's go upstairs and get you in bed," Kayce walked around to you.
You blinked, resting your hands on Kayce's shoulders.
"Really?" You almost started to cry.
"Yeah," Kayce held your waist.
"I love you," You smiled.
Kayce stayed with you all afternoon and let you rest against his chest in bed.
