You only had a few more items on your list. There was a large storm coming over the western part of the state and it would last all weekend. You had wanted to get enough food to make it through...because it wasn't just you and Kayce. Tate was with y'all this weekend and you knew the wranglers wouldn't go to the store in time so they would probably come knocking eventually.
You pushed your cart down the bread aisle and stopped when you found the loaves your new family enjoyed. You and Kayce had married in a small, quiet ceremony on the ranch back in May after dating for three years. You looked over as two women stopped and grabbed some bread too. The store was pretty packed with the storm coming.
"Wait, now tell me again," The older woman said. "Which ranch?"
"The Dutton one," The other woman replied.
Your ears perked up and you tried to focus on reading the back of one of the bread loaves. You were sure you looked weird doing so, but the women didn't seem to notice you.
"All that bad press," The woman said. "It's like John Dutton and that son of his just think they can run this valley."
You frowned, knowing just which 'son' the woman was talking about.
"And that daughter of his," The other woman shook her head.
"Better than the son!" The lady laughed. "And I think he's got a kid of his own?"
"Thought he just got married or something?" The other asked.
"Yeah, but the kid ain't with her."
"What a family."
"Hey!" You snapped, glaring over at the women.
Both of them looked surprised at you. You placed your last bread loaf in your cart and faced them. Crossing your arms, you made sure to highlight the logo embroidered on the chest of your jacket. You watched their eyes look down and then in horror, look back up to you.
"You both seem to have a lot of time on your hands," You said to them. "And opinions...about a family you clearly ain't a part of."
"Uh..." One cleared her throat.
"What on Earth could people say about the two of you I wonder?" You looked between them. "Maybe two low lives who don't have men to preoccupy their time so they take out their own insecurities and disappointments on other people they don't even know? To make them seem remotely attractive even though if they stopped to look around they'd see that no one was looking at them?"
The two women looked annoyed as they turned around. You heard one mutter 'bitch' under her breath as they walked away. Your frown left your lips as you sighed, pushing your cart back down the aisle and finishing up at the store.
When you got home and got the groceries unloaded, it started to rain. You worried for a bit until you heard Kayce's truck pull up to the house. He had promised to be home early to beat the storm. Kayce walked through the backdoor and smiled at you.
"Hey," You leaned back from the stove and kissed his lips quickly.
"Hey," Kayce took his hat off. "Storm's started."
"Glad you're home," You told him.
Kayce rubbed up and down your back, as he looked at what you were cooking.
"Smells good," He mumbled.
"Someone's favorite," You shrugged.
Kayce kissed your cheek before walking out of the kitchen, taking his coat off. An hour later you were seated next to Kayce at the dining table with everyone else eating supper.
"Can I just thank God Y/N found you, son?" John used one of his roles to sop up the sauce from his plate. "The cooking alone moves her high up on the list."
Kayce rested his hand on your thigh under the table.
"She's loyal too," Jamie said from across the table.
You gave him a curious look...it being an odd thing to say. The rest of the table looked at Jamie who wiped his mouth with his napkin and smirked at you.
"How was the store today?" He asked you.
"Uh...fine?" You answered.
"Yeah?" Jamie pushed.
"Yes..." You glanced around. "I mean it was busy but that's...normal?"
"No conversations?" Jamie shrugged.
You narrowed your eyes.
"What's this about?" Kayce asked.
You shook your head, still not one hundred percent sure what Jamie was asking for.
"She had a nice little run-in with these two women talking about the family," Jamie leaned back.
"Oh..." You said.
"What?" Kayce looked at you.
"They uh..." You shrugged. "They were just making stupid comments, it wasn't anything."
"This one here made sure it wasn't anything," Jamie nodded.
"Jamie..." You warned.
"Thought you were gonna take a swing at 'em," He laughed.
Your cheeks were warm as everyone looked between you and Jamie.
"Someone wanna actually fill us in?" John asked.
"They were just being stupid," You looked at him and then Kayce. "Honestly, they were just saying the same stuff others say about this place and some of the bad press...I just asked them to remember that people can say things about them too...so why don't we all try and be respectful."
Kayce looked at Jamie.
"Basically," Jamie shrugged.
Later that evening you were leaning up against Kayce in bed. There was a small fire in the bedroom going and you could hear the rain hitting the window hard outside. But Kayce was keeping you extra toasty. You felt him kiss the side of your head.
"You're thinking hard," He mumbled against your skin.
"How did Jamie know that I said something to those women?" You asked out loud.
"Because he was on the next aisle over," Kayce kissed your cheek, his hands rubbing up and down your arms.
"Seriously?" You leaned up and looked behind at Kayce. "Why not say that?"
"Because it's fucking Jamie," Kayce shrugged.
"Fucking Jamie..." You laughed as Kayce pulled you back against him.
"But thank you for defending us, baby," Kayce kissed your cheek again.
"Mmm," You smirked. "I was defending myself too."
"Yourself?" Kayce asked you.
"I'm a Dutton too now, remember?" You smiled up at him.
"How could I forget?" Kayce leaned in closer. "And damn right."
Kayce's lips met yours.
