Your knees were bouncing up and down fast as you waited, the two white sticks on the bathroom counter. Glancing at your watch, you saw it was time. Taking a deep breath you stood up and walked over, leaning down to see the sticks.
One line on each of them. Not pregnant.
"Damn," You muttered, tossing both sticks into the trash as you washed your hands and left the bathroom.
You walked into the living room of the cabin you shared with your husband, Kayce. He was sitting on the couch, whiskey in his hand, while he watched the recap from the Rodeo earlier today.
"Hey," Kayce turned his head but his eyes stayed on the television. "Where've you been?"
You sat down next to him with a big sigh, crossing your arms. Kayce looked at you directly this time and frowned.
"Bathroom," You muttered, your eyes looking over at him. "Still not pregnant."
"You took a test?" Kayce turned the volume down and sat the remote next to his whiskey. "Babe."
"I took two," You rolled your eyes. "But I thought...maybe this time?"
Kayce gave you a sad smile. He reached over and patted your thigh lovingly. The two of you had decided to start trying for a baby about two months ago. Not that you haven't enjoyed the...process, but it was different now that there was another meaning added to the act.
"I just thought...what if this time it happened?" You shrugged.
"It'll happen," Kayce told you.
"Will it?" You asked him. "What if something is wrong with me?"
"Ain't nothing wrong with you," Kayce wrapped his arm around your shoulders, pulling you closer to him.
"Feels like something is wrong with me," You muttered. "I just want a baby."
"I know you do," Kayce pressed his lips to the side of your head. "We'll have one."
"And if we don't?" You hated asking him this question, but it had been eating away at you for a few weeks now.
Kayce leaned back a little and looked down at you.
"Then...it's me and you," He said as if there were any other options.
"And you'd be okay with that?" You raised an eyebrow.
Kayce wanted a baby just as much as you did. The two of you talked forever about having children of your own and now that you had been trying, Kayce was over the moon about it. But you saw the hurt look on his face every time a test was negative.
"Y/N," Kayce smiled at you. "I married you...first and foremost, I wanted you."
"I know but-"
"But nothing," Kayce laughed. "If all I ever have is you and me...then I'll be as content as a man could be with that."
"But you want a baby," You told him.
"I want a baby with you," Kayce corrected. "With you...and if I can't have a baby with you, then I'm okay with just having you."
You felt a prick behind your eyes.
"I love you," You whispered.
"I love you more," Kayce leaned you back against him on the couch.
His hand rubbed up and down your arm soothingly as you listened to his heartbeat. One of your arms wrapped around his middle as you settled back to watch the television with him. You weren't really paying attention to the scores.
"Think about something else," Kayce muttered to you.
"Like what?" You asked with another sigh.
"Like..." Kayce thought for a moment. "Think about Cowboy Camp here in a few weeks."
"When all you men turn into little boys," You giggled and looked up at Kayce.
"We do not," Kayce rolled his eyes.
"Yes, y'all do," You leaned up and smiled at him. "You don't bathe, you run wild...you're-"
"Cowboys?" Kayce smirked. "Hence the name, baby."
"If we do have babies I don't know if I want them around y'all," You laughed. "They'll turn into wild dogs!"
"When," Kayce said.
"What?" You asked.
"Not if we have babies," Kayce squeezed your side. "When we do."
"Just trying to not get my hopes up for another letdown," You told him honestly.
Kayce looked at you for a few seconds.
"Let's stop then," Kayce said.
"Stop?" You asked him.
"Let's stop trying," Kayce shrugged. "Let's just...be us for a while and see what happens?"
"Wait...so you want to stop trying but not...stop trying?" You were confused.
"I'm never gonna stop making love to you," Kayce chuckled. "But let's stop doing it for the sole reason of having a baby. Let's just...be us and see what happens."
You took a deep breath, feeling the stress already leave part of your shoulders.
"I like the sound of that," You nodded.
"Yeah?" Kayce asked you.
"Yeah," You leaned back down against his chest, snuggling closer. "Thank you."
Kayce pressed a kiss to your forehead.
