Request – Kayce and the Reader had a huge fight. The reader is back in her apartment and won't let Kayce in. So Kayce sits down, and they talk through the door. You can choose if the reader lets him in or not but I hope it's the latter!
You slammed the door shut behind you, leaning back against it and looking up. This had quite possibly been the worst fight you had ever had with a boyfriend, let alone Kayce.
You knew there would be times the two of you would be tested in this relationship. You even knew that Kayce's first marriage to Monica would probably always be a sore subject. But you never thought Kayce would through Monica in your face, compare you to her in the way that he did.
You were in town, at dinner with Kayce. It started out normal, you were happy to see him after both of you had a long day at work. Kayce had tired eyes and that usually meant he was more needy. You were usually okay with that and even kissed him hello longer than you would in public.
Then you talked about your days, comparing notes about the hurdles and challenges both of you had gone through respectably. And then the subject of Tate's birthday came up.
Monica was throwing an eighth birthday party for him this weekend, on the Reservation. All of Kayce's family had been invited, but you never got an invitation. When you told Kayce this, he double downed on Monica being able to do that...she was his mother. You thought it was mean and spiteful. Kayce tried to explain that it wasn't you in particular, that Monica would do this to anyone Kayce dated after her, but that made you feel worse.
"So, I don't even matter that I've been a nice person to her?" You asked. "That I always go out of my way to make sure she's comfortable? That she sets the rules? She controls Tate's life and if we see him or not. And she just hates me because I'm the next warm body in your bed?"
Your last line made Kayce get defensive, having slept with a few women in between Monica and you. He wasn't dating then, he was just...being a cowboy and thought that would be his life until you came along two years ago and changed his outlook.
Kayce then called you difficult and mumbled that he thought he was past all of this. You ended up throwing your water in his face and walking out of the diner. You didn't stop moving until you got to your apartment.
You pushed off the door and sat your purse down on the counter, kicking your boots off and hanging your jacket up in the closet. You felt miserable and the only person you wanted to call was Kayce.
You pushed back tears as you went to grab a beer from your fridge when there was a knock at your door. Frowning you walked over and looked through the peephole to see Kayce standing there.
He waited a few seconds before he knocked again. You didn't move, standing here and feeling hurt all over again.
"Y/N?" Kayce called, his fists hitting the wood for a third time.
"Go away," You said out loud.
You watched Kayce's shoulders slump as he stepped closer to the door, his head down. Kayce took his hat off and gently knocked his knuckles against the door again.
"Baby, please," Kayce said in a more gentle tone now. "Open the door."
"I said go away," You held your stance.
"We need to talk about this," Kayce said.
"You said everything you need to," You cleared your throat. "I'm difficult, right? Then let me make this easy for you...for once, I guess...just walk away."
"I ain't walking away," Kayce leaned his side against the door. "I didn't mean those words."
"Then why'd you say them?" You asked.
"Will you please open the door?" Kayce asked but when you didn't reply he sighed. "I was angry...but not at you."
"Then you should win an award for acting," You snapped.
You watched Kayce lean onto his back and slowly slide down the door to sit, his legs stretching out. You couldn't see him very well anymore, so you leaned down and mirrored him on the other side of your apartment door.
"I hate this," Kayce said, and you pulled your knees up.
"Hate what?" You asked.
"This constant fighting with Monica," Kayce sighed. "With everything. It's not just Tate...it's my life and how I raise him...it's who I have around me, who I want around him...I was never good enough when we were married and now I ain't good enough as a father or co-parent...or whatever the fuck this is."
"I don't see you ever sticking up for yourself with her," You said gently. "All I've ever seen is you caving to her wants and needs."
"She'll take him," Kayce said after a while.
You felt your heart drop. Slowly you turned around and reached up for the door. Turning the knob, you opened your door to come face to face with Kayce, both of you on the floor. His eyes were watery as he looked over at you.
"We won't let that happen," You told him.
"We?" Kayce asked you with a raised brow.
"We," You nodded. "Unless you think I'm too difficult still."
"You're not difficult," Kayce shook his head, turning to face you more. "You've done everything right."
"You can't go after me when you want to go after her," You cleared your throat. "I think that's what you were doing."
"I'm sorry," Kayce said.
"I know you are," You scooted forward and leaned against his chest.
Kayce's arm wrapped around you, pulling you against him as he took a deep breath. You snuggled into his neck, your arm wrapping around to tangle your fingers into his hair as you both sat there.
"Come to the party with me," Kayce mumbled.
"You think that's a good idea?" You looked up at him. "She clearly doesn't want me there."
"If she'll have my father, then she can have you," Kayce nodded. "Come with me."
"I don't want to put you in jeopardy," You leaned up to look at Kayce better.
"I want you there," Kayce said. "I know Tate wants you there."
"I want to be there," You said to make sure Kayce didn't think otherwise. "I just don't want Monica to do something stupid with me being there."
"As you said, we won't let that happen," Kayce pushed some of your hair over your shoulder.
"Okay," You smiled. "Have we made up now?"
Kayce pulled your lips down to his in a needy kiss. Your hands reached into his hair as he pushed you back into your apartment.
"Now we have," Kayce said in between kisses, his boot shutting the door behind both of you.
