Request - Could you do one where he comes home late and is being secretive and weird and tey fight and the ntheir baby wakes up and Oakley is then very protective of her because kayce has hurt her. But they end working things out

Author's Note – you said Oakley in your request, but I'm going to change it to Y/N for this one-shot!

You were sure you looked about as bad as your felt. Dark circles under your eyes, dull irises, your hair was pulled into a knotted, messy ponytail, and your back was killing you. But that's what happens when you have a newborn. Your little girl was only three weeks old. She was perfect, and you had done everything in your power to keep her that way so far. It had its challenges though...she was a Dutton, after all.

You had finally gotten her to sleep about ten minutes ago. It was nearing two in the morning though, and your husband was still not home. Kayce had gone back to work earlier this week and you had barely seen him. Between the State of Montana and your father-in-law, it seemed like the two weeks of bliss you had with just Kayce and your newborn were far over. But you were at your breaking point tonight.

Headlights through the foreman's cabin window made you look over. He was home.

You waited a few minutes and saw the front door open carefully, Kayce stepping inside. He pulled his coat off and hung his hat up next to it before turning around. He stopped when he saw you standing there. Tears were already threatening to fall from your eyes.

"Y/N..." Kayce whispered out.

"Don't," You held your hand up. "Don't be nice. Don't give me an excuse. Don't act like this isn't a big deal."

"Alright," Kayce walked over to you slowly.

You shook your head, running your hands over your face.

"Where have you been?" You asked him.

"Had a thing with my dad," Kayce said.

"A thing that lasts until two in the morning?" You raised your eyebrow at him. "Do you think I'm an idiot."

"No, I don't," Kayce sighed.

"Then don't lie to me," You snapped.

"I ain't lying," Kayce narrowed his eyes. "I don't lie to you."

"Not telling me someone is not a hard stretch," You argued.

"Baby, we're both tired...can we-"

"I'm not tired, Kayce," You raised your voice. "I'm exhausted! You've left me by myself this week with our newborn baby."

"I haven't left you alone," Kayce defended. "I've just...it got busy and with the time off I needed to catch up."

"I get that with work," You sighed. "I don't get that with doing a job with your father late at night...out of the past four nights, you've come home after midnight for three of them."

Kayce didn't say anything.

"I can't do this by myself, Kayce," You felt a tear roll down your cheek.

"You're not," Kayce ran his fingers through is hair. "You don't understand, it's just how-"

"Things are done here?" You laughed sarcastically. "Don't feed me bullshit responses, Kayce."

"Then what do you want me to say?" Kayce yelled at you. "You're picking fights and you don't even know what you want from me!"

"I want you to be a part of this!" You yelled back. "I want you to want this with me and our baby!"

As if on cue, you heard cries from the back bedroom. You dropped your shoulders, your face immediately going from anger to sadness as you heard your baby's cries. It was as if Kayce also felt what you did.

You turned around and walked quickly back to the crib where she was laying. Gently you picked her up, rocking on your feet like you knew she loved. You made cooing noises as you held her in your arms.

"M'sorry baby girl," You whispered to her, the cries quieting down at your voice. "We didn't mean to wake you up."

"I can take her."

You bounced on your feet and turned around. Kayce was standing in the doorway watching you closely. His eyes held a lot of sorrow in them, and you got a good look at him now. He was sorry.

"I have her," You heard yourself as if it were a natural response.

Kayce looked like you slapped him.

"Why do you get to just be the savior who quiets her down?" You couldn't help yourself one more dig.

"Y/N," Kayce sighed. "We both know you're better at this than me."

You looked down at your daughter who had grown quiet. Her eyes were closed, little fists tight against her chin as she fell back asleep. You slowed your rocking and stepped back over to her crib, laying her down gently. Watching her for a moment, you took a deep breath and turned back around to look at Kayce. He nodded his head for you to follow him back out.

The two of you walked into your bedroom across the hall, Kayce closing the door behind you. You stood in the center and faced him, your arms crossed.

"I'm sorry," Kayce said.

"For what?" You asked, not entirely sure what he meant at the moment.

"This whole week," Kayce stepped closer to you. "The way things are because of my family."

You pressed your lips into a thin line.

"Your family is your family, Kayce," You blinked slowly. "We can't change that, nor would I because that's not fair...but you have to realize that our baby comes first now."

"I do," Kayce nodded. "I know you don't...I know it's complicated and I don't make it easy to understand, but what I do...the things I do are for her and you."

"I just don't see this being a good thing," You shook your head.

"I know," Kayce sighed. "Because it's not...this place isn't good. But it's what we have and if we want to give her a life then we have to protect it."

You smiled at Kayce, surprising both of you.

"What?" He asked.

"You said we," You pointed out. "As in what you and me have to give her."

"Yes...we," Kayce reached over and wrapped his arms around you. "If that's what you still want."

"I want us, Kayce," You looked up at him. "I've only ever wanted us."

He nodded at you.

"I'm sorry I snapped at you earlier," You mumbled. "Sorry I questioned what you wanted in life."

Kayce pulled you into his chest and you relaxed in his arms.

"Think we want the same thing," He mumbled into your hair. "Just have...different ways about going at it."

You hugged him back.

"I love you," You told him and felt his heart quicken.

"Love you, darlin'," Kayce said.

You leaned your head up and Kayce pressed his lips against yours.
