Request – Apartment Door – Part Three – Court Case

You were waiting on the front porch of the main house with John. Earlier you had stood with Kayce, next to his truck, before he left for his court case against Monica. Kayce was asking for fifty-fifty custody of Tate. Currently, it was about seventy-twenty, and that was if Monica was feeling generous.

"Just be humble," You told Kayce. "You're a good father, you're a good person...you just want the time you deserve with your son."

"I just keep thinking something bad will happen," Kayce confessed.

"Don't think like that," You smiled up at him, trying to be supportive. "Judge Andrews is a fair man...and Tate needs to have both his parents equally in his life."

"I don't want this to impact him negatively," Kayce sighed. "I've already put him through enough shit."

"The judge will see that," You reached out and smoothed out his jacket. "You wanted to settle this between lawyers...Monica took it to the courts."

"I wish you could come with me," Kayce looked into your eyes.

"I'm with you," You leaned up and pressed your lips to his. "And I'll be here when you get back no matter what happens."

Kayce looked nervous as he got in his truck and drove off.

That was about three hours ago. You were pacing the front porch, knowing Kayce should have been back by now. John was sitting in one of the chairs with a whisky in his hands even though it was only two in the afternoon.

"It's been too long," You muttered.

"You wanna drink?" John asked.

"I think I'd puke it up," You sighed.

"You're wearing a line into my porch," John mentioned.

"The porch that's been here since the 1800s?" You snapped as you crossed your arms.

"It'll all work out," John said.

"I just wish Kayce would call me," You muttered, walking over to the edge of the porch. "I just want to know if he's okay."

"It's endearing," John said.

"What is?" You looked back at him.

"Your love for my son," John finished his glass and stood up. "It's just nice to see...haven't seen someone with Kayce like you in a long time, if ever."

A car pulled around the corner and your heart leaped, only to see Beth driving up to the house. You watched her get out and slip her purse over her shoulder.

"This some sort of intervention?" Beth asked, walking up the steps.

"We're waiting for Kayce," You rolled your eyes. "He had his custody hearing today."

"Wouldn't have needed to if you had just let me shoot her," Beth said.

"No one's shooting anyone," You frowned.

"Are you sure she can hack it in this family?" Beth asked her father.

"Yes, Beth," John nodded. "I think Y/N is doing just fine."

That surprised you. John and Kayce had a strained relationship, one you tried to steer clear of if you were able to. So, to hear him say that not only he liked you, but you had what it took to be in the family, calmed your nerves slightly.

You glanced over at Beth who was looking at you with an impressed look. The sound of a truck pulling up made all three of you turn. Kayce's truck pulled into a spot next to Beth's and you held your breath while Kayce got out of the truck. He looked up at you, then opened the back door.
