Request - After the attack on the ranch Kayce and reader have a moment and reader says I thought they killed you and Kayce says if you wasn't breathing I thought the same thing and they finally tell the other one how they feel.

You sat on the tailgate of one of the Dutton trucks, watching the sunset turn into dusk over the mountain range in the background. Walker and Ryan were leaning against the side of the truck next to you, the three of you quiet. Beth walked up to where you were sitting, handing you a mug of whiskey and coffee.

You gave her a small smile as she walked on down to where Rip was standing next to Lloyd, Colby, and Teeter. Everyone looked rough, having just gone through about three hours of defending the ranch from an attack. It was because of John; you knew it was because of John...the fact he was in the hospital from multiple gunshot wounds told you this.

But your mind was on another Dutton. Kayce Dutton and you had been trying to figure out what type of relationships was going on between the two of you for months now and you had been on the phone with him when he was also attacked. You weren't sure if you were dating, or sleeping together, or what it was.

Due to the insanity that ensured after that call ended, you didn't know Kayce was okay until a little bit ago when you finally talked to Sherriff Haskell.

"Y/N?" Rip asked, walking up to you. "Let's go...I'll drive you to Kayce."

You took a breath and hopped off, racing around to the passenger side and getting in. The drive was quiet as you looked out the window, the adrenaline leaving your body. Rip pulled into the parking lot and up to the front entrance.

"Thank you," You said softly, the first time you had spoken in a while.

"He's alive, Y/N," Rip said, staring ahead. "All of us made it."

"Yeah," You nodded, getting out and shutting the door.

You walked inside and up to the receptionist's desk. An older woman behind the counter looked up at you with a smile.

"Dutton?" You asked, hopeful.

She glanced at her screen.

"Are you family?" She asked you.

"Girlfriend," You frowned, scared she'd turn you away. "He's...the whole family is sort of..."

"We know, dear," The woman nodded. "Follow me."

She got up and walked around, leading you down on of the hallways. The lights were dim as you went farther back. The place smelled like bleach and was so sterile looking.

"Mr. Dutton came in with two gunshot wounds...one in his collarbone area, the other in his side near his hip," The woman looked back at you. "He went straight into surgery. Both shots were clean and through, so he'll need to stay for a few days for observation...but he's going to be just fine."

She stopped at a door and smiled.

"We're glad he has someone," She said. "With what we heard happened...we were concerned about after care."

"What do I need to do?" You asked.

"His dressing will still need to be cleaned," The woman picked up his chart outside the door. "Pain medication will need to be monitored and he might need some assistance in moving around for a few days...but in a week he should be closer to normal."

"O-Okay," You nodded. "Think I can do that."

"Honey," The woman smiled. "He got shot...he's got IV's and monitors all over him right now and he's heavily sedated still. He'll probably wake up a little more here in a few hours. I just want you to know what you're walking into."
