Request - Monica does not like the reader and keeps trying to make her leave Kayce. She doesn't invite her to Tate's birthday party on the reservation and it's the last straw for Kayce.
"You're going," Kayce stood behind you as you pulled your boot off.
"No, Kayce," You sighed. "I'm not."
"Yes, you are," He walked around so you looked up at him.
"She clearly doesn't want me there," You threw your hands up. "I was literally uninvited."
"This is bullshit!" Kayce snapped.
You knew he was angry, it was all over his face. But he was in the same middle as you were. While no one on the Dutton side liked Monica, she did hold the power over who could and could not see Tate when he was with her. And she had about seventy percent of custody right now, due to her being the mom.
"She's already angry that you asked about me," You slowly rose up. "I don't want to make her say something or do something else to you or worst of all, Tate."
"You deserve to be there," Kayce's eyes danced across your face. "You're just as part of his family as any of us are."
"I can celebrate with him at a later time," You felt tears come to your eyes, the reality sinking in you wouldn't be there today though. "I-It's fine."
"No, it ain't," Kayce sighed, stepping over to you.
There was a knock and you both turned around to see Beth standing there.
"We need to go if we want to make it on time," She said softly.
You felt KAyce look at you one more time but you kept your eyes on Beth. Kayce sighed heavily and then stomped out of the room past his sister.
"Beth?" You asked her, feeling your throat tighten.
"I'll tell him you love him," Beth nodded.
"Thanks," You felt a tear roll down your cheek.
You waited until you heard the trucks drive off before you sunk down on your bed and started to cry. This wasn't the first time Monica had kept you from Tate, and you were sure it wouldn't be the last.
It didn't seem to matter you had now been with Kayce for almost three years. It didn't seem to matter you had developed a solid relationship with Tate too over that time period. It didn't matter that when Tate was with his father, the three of you went fishing, riding, exploring and enjoyed being together. Monica just didn't like you.
The first birthday of Tate's you all shared, Monica threw a fit. It was at the ranch and she didn't realize you'd be there. She questioned your morals and just how long you'd be with Kayce. She said she didn't want her son to get attached to someone who just wanted the family's money and land.
You didn't tell Kayce for weeks and when you did he almost didn't believe it at first. But then when he asked Monica, she didn't hide from it either. She always made comments to you, or when you weren't there, about you. The good thing about today was most of Kayce's family would be there and they supported you.
You also knew John was getting him a horse for his birthday today, and the horse was back here. So something told you Tate would end up here to see his horse and you'd get to hug him. You just would miss cake, singing, and everything else.
You busied yourself around the house, picking up what you could and making yourself a snack since you knew you should eat something. Your phone buzzed about an hour left of the party. It was Kayce.
"Hey?" You answered.
"Hey, baby," Kayce's voice warmed your insides.
"What're you doing?" You asked with a small smile. "Are you in your truck?"
