Two months later
You had to be late this morning due to a dentist appointment. Getting out of your truck you saw they had finished installing the new window at your office building. You all now had bullet-proof glass in every window. Walking into the building you looked down at the new hardwood floors they also had put in. The carpet had been...stained. You saw Grace at your desk leaving some mail.
"Good morning," You said with a smile.
"Good morning," Grace nodded at you. "Coming from the ranch?"
"Dentist actually," You said with a laugh. "I had canceled the last two appointments, so I had to go to this one!"
"Well, good," Grace smiled. "No calls this morning, but I think he's in a mood."
"He's here?" You looked up from dropping your bag down. "He ain't supposed to be back yet."
"Came in and slammed his door shut," Grace shrugged. "Haven't seen him since but we've heard him."
"Okay," You glanced down the hall at his office. "Let me go make sure he doesn't break something in there."
"Good luck," Grace made a face and walked off.
You brushed off your sweater dress and walked down the hallway. Now, your boots echoed on the floor as you stopped outside his door, knocking three times. You didn't hear anything, so you grabbed the handle and pushed open the door. Kayce was sitting at his desk and looked over at the sound of his door opening.
"What're you doing back here?" You asked him. "You're supposed to be resting...you have another two weeks."
"I ain't laying in that fucking bed for two more weeks," Kayce snapped, and your eyes widened. "Sorry."
Kayce turned his chair to face you and leaned on his desk. You slowly walked over to his desk and leaned back next to where he was sitting, crossing your arms.
"It's not that I don't want you here...I just don't want you to jeopardize your healing," You said softly.
Kayce reached his arm around your waist, holding your hip farthest from him. His warm eyes looked up into yours.
A month ago, Kayce filed for a divorce from Monica. You had stayed out of it for the first two weeks. But Monica had blown up and thrown a huge fit, fighting Kayce in court with anything he asked for. It had been messy; it was still messy. But two weeks ago, you had stopped by the ranch late one evening to drop off paperwork for Kayce to sign. You had shared a whiskey with him and the two of you talked about his divorce and relationships. One thing led to another and when you were saying bye to Kayce, your lips either slipped or he turned his head...you weren't sure, but the two of you shared a kiss. You immediately left after that. The next day, Kayce showed up at the office, and after you freaked on him for being out of bed...he told you he didn't know what the future would look like, but he had wanted to kiss you for a long time.
Since then, you'd seen Kayce almost every day for work things. But your hugs were longer than normal, your looks longer than normal. You'd have never pegged Kayce to be an affectionate guy, but the man had touched you in some capacity for the last two weeks at any chance he could. Like now, as you looked down at his hand on your hip.
"I'm fine," Kayce said and you rolled your eyes.
"You were shot twice," You frowned. "Your whole family was attacked...you're not fine, Kayce. You're healing."
"I am now," Kayce leaned back in his chair, his hand on your hip slipping down to your knee before it left you.
You sighed, but a smile crept onto your face. You reached behind you and pulled a folder around, opening it and flipping to a page.
"This needs your signature," You handed him the folder. "I was going to bring it to you this afternoon."
"Monica's at the ranch," Kayce said signing the document. "Part of the reason I'm here and I didn't want you coming this afternoon."
"Oh," You nodded, feeling uncomfortable.
Kayce looked up at you after setting the folder on his desk.
"She's getting her things from the ranch," Kayce explained. "Nothing more than picking up some boxes but with Tate there I know she'll hang around to see him for as long as she can."
You nodded, not trusting your voice.
"Nothing's changed," Kayce shook his head. "Still moving forward and everything. I just didn't want you to feel weird."
"Doesn't mean I don't still feel...weird," You sighed.
"I know," Kayce stood up slowly, holding his left side. "I'm sorry I...moved us further along than we should be. It's not respectful to you."
"I know you're divorcing," You now had to look up at him. "But you're still technically married, and I feel like I'm some...other woman or something."
"You're not," Kayce said quickly.
"But I feel that way," Oakley pointed out.
"I shouldn't have kissed you," Kayce sighed. "I wanted to...I don't regret it, but your face right now makes me realize I should have waited out of respect for you."
You noted he didn't say Monica but didn't voice it. You shook your head and put on a small smile for him, standing up yourself.
"Time," You said. "Just a little time."
Kayce's eyes dragged down and back up your body.
"Stop looking at me like that," You told him.
"Like what?" Kayce smirked.
You shook your head. The sound of the front door slamming shut reached your ear and you felt your body jump into Kayce's. Your hand grabbed for his shirt as you buried your nose in his neck. Kayce held your back with one hand as he steadied both of you. A few voices passed by his office and then faded away. You were breathing hard when you realized what you had done. Slowly you pulled back and looked at Kayce, your fingers releasing his shirt.
"Sorry," You stammered out.
"Don't be," Kayce said softly. "Do you do that often with loud noises?"
"Um..." You didn't finish.
The fact was you did. When there is loud noise around you, a panic will set in and spread throughout your body. You hadn't been with him though since it had started happening to you.
"It's okay," Kayce rubbed your back soothingly. "It can happen after something like that."
"Yeah," You nodded. "Guess also being here...but they've done a good job cleaning things up."
"The office looks nice," Kayce nodded, still staring at you. "I know you've been a big part of that."
"Just trying to get the team back to some type of normalcy," You told him, still standing close.
"Thank you for taking care of us," Kayce's hand moved to hold your cheek in his palm. "Selfishly, thanks for taking care of me."
Despite your brain telling you no, you leaned your head against his hand. Kayce leaned his head down and rested his forehead against yours. His thumb soothed over your cheek, and you felt your heart rate drop back to normal.
"Feel better?" Kayce asked you.
You nodded your head.
"Thank you," You said and surprised both of you by stepping closer to Kayce.
"You went through it too," Kayce said. "It's okay to have someone take care of you too."
You blinked a few times, looking into his eyes. Your mind kept pulling you back. Yes, he was divorcing but it wasn't finalized. You needed to wait until it was finalized. He's almost done...
"Fuck it," You whispered before pressing your lips to Kayce's.
His arms wrapped around you as he kissed you back. One of your hands held the back of his neck as Kayce tilted his head, deepening the kiss. You pulled him as close as you could, being mindful of his injuries. Kayce's lips were warm and inviting as he kissed you soundly, sweetly holding you. A knock on his office door made you both look down, breathing hard.
"Commissioner?" Grace's voice came through. "You've got your eleven o'clock meeting that you shouldn't have in person...here."
Kayce tilted his head back up.
"Thanks, Grace," Kayce called out. "I'll come to get him in a few minutes...signing away my life in here right now thanks to, Y/N."
You looked at Kayce when he mentioned your name.
"Yes, sir," Grace said and then walked away.
Kayce looked at you with a love-sick smile on his lips. You shook your head slowly, matching his smile though with your own. Kayce leaned in and kissed you slowly one more time. It was a kiss that left you breathless as he pulled away from you. He then dropped his arms and stepped around you, walking to his door. You gathered some of the papers on his desk and then followed him out. Kayce let you walk in front of him as he walked behind you toward the front of the office.
You went to your desk while he went to shake hands with the guy waiting.
**
"Time to go home."
You looked up from your screen as Kayce was walking up to your desk. It was after five and you were honestly waiting around for him before at five-thirty you were kicking him out yourself. You switched off your computer and stood up from your chair.
"How're you feeling?" You asked Kayce as you met him near the front door.
"Fine," Kayce said. "Promise."
"Will you stay at the ranch tomorrow?" You asked him, placing your bag over your shoulder. "Being here all day was a lot for you."
"Depends," Kayce said. "Will you come to the ranch tomorrow?"
"Nothing for you to sign tomorrow," You shrugged. "We're pretty solid until next week actually."
"That wasn't my question," Kayce looked at you.
"Oh," You blushed. "I-I can come by...sure."
"Y/N...I don't want you uncomfortable." Kayce sighed.
"I'm not," You laughed. "Honestly, I want you right now in this very front lobby."
Kayce blinked back at you.
"But I also know what that would do to you and me," You smiled. "And I want you to be one hundred percent sure about me. Because I haven't stopped thinking about you kissing me since this morning."
Kayce smiled at you.
"Me neither," He said. "That was nice."
"Yeah," You nodded.
"We should do that more," Kayce stepped closer to you.
"Did you not hear what I just said?" You asked with a laugh.
"I did," Kayce nodded. "That's why I want you to come work from the ranch tomorrow."
"Why?" You asked, still confused.
"Because I can kiss you all day long if you're out there with me," Kayce said lowly.
You felt your knees grow a little weak. Clearing your throat you adjusted your bag.
"Fine," You smiled. "See you at the ranch then, Commissioner."
