Request - a part two of You and Tate where you find a body while you're excavating
"Tate...only a few more minutes buddy," You sat up and looked over at the kid. "I promised your dad we'd be done before the sun went down."
"Come on," Tate whined. "We've done so much today!"
You had made some progress on the dinosaur bones Tate had found in front of his mom's house on the reservation. Taking your Saturday, you showed Tate how to set up a perimeter around the bones and slowly start to uncover them. They still had a few inches of dirt on them, but you had done quite well for just you and an eight-year-old.
"They'll still be here tomorrow," You laughed.
You grabbed your supplies and stood up, dusting off your jeans. You saw Tate look to his other side and lean close to the dirt. You rolled your eyes, tossing your glove to his head.
"Come one, Tate," You smirked.
"Look," Tate pointed and you stepped over, leaning down to his level. "What bone is that?"
You kneeled down and leaned closer, not having seen this one before. It was only partial, smooth, and looked like a silver dollar from the beach almost.
"I don't know," You mumbled.
"Is it part of the dinosaur?" Tate asked you.
"Here," You reached for a brush and gently moved some of the dirt.
The circle grew until you could tell whatever kind it was, it curved. You worked faster than you should have, but it was late and you were losing daylight now. Tate leaned into your side as you worked, watching your hands.
"Hey!" Kayce's voice made you both look up at him. "I promised you both supper in town."
"Hold on, Dad!" Tate said. "We found another bone."
"We don't know," You smiled at Tate and then went back to work.
A few minutes later you stopped, freezing as it hit you what bone you were currently unearthing. You leaned back on your toes and looked up at Kayce. His smile turned into a frown when he saw your expression.
"What?" Kayce asked you.
"Um," You looked at Tate who was watching you like a hawk. "It's a...this is a skull bone."
"Cool!" Tate cheered, leaning down.
You looked up at Kayce.
"Tate," Kayce said with a tone to not be messed with. "Get out of there now."
"What? Why?" Tate looked between you both.
"It's a human bone, Tate," You brushed some of his hair back. "I can't work on it...we can't dig this up."
"Why not?" Tate asked.
"Tate!" Kayce snapped.
You stood up and helped Tate get out of the hole. Kayce held his hand out for you to take and you climbed out. Tate was still looking at you for more information.
"We need to call the police," You smiled softly at him.
"Oh," Tate widened his eyes.
"Go wash up," Kayce told Tate who ran off quickly.
You turned to Kayce and sighed.
"So much for it just being bird bones," You shrugged.
"Yeah," Kayce glanced down at the hole. "Could you tell what kind?"
