Request - Y/n has been Kacey's assistant for a while and gets stuck in the crossfire when those people shoot up his office, he protects for, doesn't leave her side, and somehow falls in love I trust you on where this will go.

You could see Kayce parking in front of the office. He was late this morning, which only meant one thing. For the last two years, you have worked as the Livestock Commissioner's assistant. You came on during the last month with John Dutton, before his son took it over for him. Kayce opened the door and shut it behind him.

Anyone else, you would have commented on them being late, but when Kayce's eyes met yours, you knew. Monica and he had had another fight. They were getting more frequent, and while you didn't know all the details, you knew your boss. And your boss looked like he'd been drug through the mud this morning. So you took a deep breath and offered him a genuine smile.

"Morning, Kayce," You said softly so none of the other employees could hear you.

There were only four of you in the office full time, and then countless officers coming in and out. One thing you did learn early on with Kayce was he liked it when you didn't acknowledge him as the Commissioner. Everyone else did in this place, but you would treat him as a human being.

"Any calls?" Kayce asked.

He didn't say it back to you, which meant the fight was still ongoing and clouding his mind. You, as an employee, didn't like it when his mind wasn't clear. His role needed him to have a clear mind.  You squeezed your nails into your palm to keep a comment from escaping. Glancing down you saw a few stickie notes on your desk for him.

"None needed right now," You looked back up at Kayce who was standing in front of your desk facing you. "What do you need this morning?"

"A new morning?" Kayce shrugged before closing his eyes and rubbing the back of his neck.

Kayce was good at keeping his personal life out of the office, but now and then Monica proved to be too much and he'd cave.

"I can do a lot of things," You smiled. "But I can't do that, unfortunately...you'll have to find a new assistant if that's what you need."

"You're the best one I've ever had," Kayce blinked his eyes back open and looked at you.

"I'm the only assistant you've ever had," You joked and saw the hint of a smile on Kayce's lips.

"Which is why you can't leave," Kayce then lowered his tense shoulders. "I need you."

It should impact you the way it did. But whenever Kayce was nice to you, sweet to you, you felt warm inside you. You'd never done anything to act on these feelings though, he was technically married, but that didn't mean you didn't feel them. You'd be lying if you didn't say Kayce was attractive. You'd be lying if you didn't think about it. But again...this wasn't the time nor place in his life for you to be that for him.

"I'll come get you in about an hour?" You said. "That way you can...collect yourself before your first actual call. There's coffee on your desk too."

"Thanks, Y/N," Kayce then smiled at you before he walked down the hall to his office.

"I signed this one," Kayce looked at the paper you placed in front of him.

"No, you signed last month's agreement," You pointed to the date on the page. "This is this month."

"Are we early?" Kayce looked up at you from his seat.

"Technically we were late last month," You grimaced.
