Request – A Reader and Kayce one shot to The Whole Damn Town's in Love with You by the Turnpike Troubadours
I can go down town and drink 'til dawn
I can sing those sad old country songs
Oh, but daylight finds me bored and blue
The whole damn town's in love with you
You specifically went here with your friends because the Dutton boys never came to this bar. You made sure to pick a place that you wouldn't see him because you weren't sure you could fight off running straight to those golden eyes.
You two had decided to take a break. Things had gotten messy and you needed some space to think what it was you wanted in life and with him.
But here he was, leaning against the damn bar, looking deadly under the neon lights. His eyes locked on you the second you walked in. Your friends held your arms to keep you from running and dragged you to the other side, placing your orders. The bar tender was a cousin of yours and high fived you when he saw you. It made you smile some and shake off the nerves. There was a girl you went to high school with you passed by and hugged you sideways.
Well, the neon signs light up the block
It's a livin' breathin' honky-tonk
And your hair's wet with the mornin' dew
The whole damn town's in love with you
The whole damn town's in love with you
The bar was packed, and since this was the side of town you grew up in, you knew most of the people in there. You were talking to a neighbor of your parents when Ryan passed by you. You locked eyes with him as he nodded his hat to you with a small smile. You offered him one and turned back to the bar, sitting your empty bottle on it and walking out to the back patio for some air.
When you looked to your left you saw Kayce sitting with Jimmy and Walker in a corner, his eyes on you instantly. This time you didn't turn away, you stared for a second, taking him in. He had on his work boots and jeans, a marron button down and his black cowboy hat. He looked good, and you forced your legs to walk to the edge of the railing that overlooking the forest behind the bar. It had been misty this afternoon, the coolness and dampness still in the air as you breathed in.
Now all the cowboys in this bar
Oh, and all those fools that play guitar
Well, they're well aware that we are through
The whole damn town's in love with you
"Hey, Y/N," This guy who had tried to date you a few years ago walked by, tipping his hat.
You smiled at him but then faced forward again.
"Didn't know you'd be here," Another guy gently touched your arm as he passed you...you couldn't remember his name though.
You tucked a piece of hair behind your head as you felt our lungs open up from being in the smokey bar earlier.
"Hey, Y/N, good to see you," A friend from work walked by.
You smiled and hugged her, asking her how things were.
"Oh, you know, surviving," She smiled. "Hey, listen, I don't know if you're looking but I do have a brother who just became single. Just let me know and I can set that up."
"I'm okay right now, but thank you," You nodded, turning around, and walking back into the bar.
Your eyes looked over, but Kayce wasn't in the seat he had been in.
Well, the music pours out on the street
Just as clean and cool as a cotton sheet
Well, they moan the lonesome and feel the blues
The whole damn town's in love with you
The whole damn town's in love with you
You found your friends and told them you were going to leave. It was even more crowded now, so you wiggled your way through and bounced outside into the street, damp and shining in the neon lights. You waved to a few people you knew as they were walking in and walked down into the parking lot more.
When you looked up to your Jeep, you saw Kayce leaning against it. That put a wrench into your plans to leave without him noticing you. But why was he already out here?
"How'd you know I was leaving?" You asked as you stopped in front of him.
"Just did," Kayce shrugged. "You looked uncomfortable."
"No, I didn't," You argued out of spite. "I was friendly and smiled."
"I know..." Kayce smirked. "Which is why everyone in that place had their eyes on you."
"What are you talking about?" You walked over and leaned beside him on the front of your Jeep.
Well, your worn-out favorite pair of jeans
Oh, I remember everything
There were things I'd grown accustomed to
The whole damn town's in love with you
Kayce's eyes looked up and down your body, resting a little too long on your jeans. It was then you realizes you had worn his favorite of yours. It was funny, because they were so worn out, but they fit you like a glove. Slowly, Kayce's eyes traveled back up to yours and he smiled.
"The whole damn town's in love with you," He said, nudging your shoulder with his.
"No one's in love with me," You shook your head but felt a warm blush spread along your cheeks.
"Yes, there is," Kayce mumbled softly, making you turn your head and look at him.
The two of you stared at each other for a few seconds.
"Do you have to go back with the wranglers?" You asked him in an almost whisper.
Kayce shook his head no.
You certainly felt the tension between the two of you. It had been there the day you met Kayce, only growing stronger.
"You wanna ride?" You asked him.
"How about I drive?" Kayce smiled and held out his hand.
You placed yours in his and looked back him. His hand was warm, and you felt yourself leaning closer to him.
"Your keys," Kayce chuckled as you snatched your hand away, embarrassed.
You handed him your keys and stood up, smiling from the feelings he was giving you and the beer. Kayce reached out and pulled you by your belt back into him. You leaned your head back to look up at him and saw the stars behind him.
"The whole damn town's in love with you."
The whole damn town's in love with you
Well, the whole damn town's in love with you
The whole damn town's in love with you
The whole damn town's in love with you
