Request – Kayce forgets your birthday or he's late for your birthday and he's trying to be all lovey and cute and the Reader just isn't having it because he's been late every night for weeks and she just wants to spend time with him. They have a mini fight but it's filled with just love for each other and of course it's a happy ending! Thank you!!
You had just finished taking your makeup off when you heard the door open and shut to the foreman's cabin. Glancing at the time, you saw it was almost midnight, Kayce had made it home with about four minutes left of your birthday.
You sat the towel down and pulled your hair up into a ponytail before you turned around. As you stepped into the bedroom you saw Kayce standing by the bed.
He looked sad almost...his shoulders slumped as he reached up and removed his hat. In his left hand were some wildflowers. You could tell he picked them himself. Probably along the roadside on his way back from whatever he had gone off to for work.
Your arms crossed in front of your loosely, there wasn't much fight left in you tonight. But it was your birthday. You had barely seen Kayce this morning...you more felt him press a kiss to your cheek before he left the bed early.
"I know I don't deserve anything from you right now," Kayce spoke.
"Maybe an ass kicking," You mumbled.
"Yeah, maybe that," Kayce nodded and waited a few minutes. "I am sorry, baby."
"What was it this time, Kayce?" You sighed. "Horse thieves? Criminals stealing gas tanks? Ranchers shooting at each other? Deal gone wrong on the Reservation? What's the excuse this time?"
Kayce looked defeated.
"You know what? I don't even care," You eld your hands up before walking around him and to your side of the bed. "I'm tried...I had a long day too, and I just wanna got to bed and forget this day."
"Y/N..." Kayce sighed and looked over at you.
"I'm tired, Kayce," You pulled the covers back.
You were tired. This was the third week in a row that you hadn't seen Kayce come home before dark. You barely saw him in the mornings...it was getting old.
"I know you are," Kayce nodded.
You had climbed in, pulling the blankets over your legs and looking up from where you sat on the bed. All you wanted was him. You just wanted to see him, hold him, spend time with him. You had craved him in all those ways for three weeks now and you thought that for some reason he would make it happen on your birthday. You looked at the time.
"Day's over," You sighed.
Kayce walked over and sat next to you on the bed, facing you. The bouquet of flowers still in his hand as his other arm leaned over your waist so he could hold himself up.
"I'm sorry," Kayce said, and you could tell he meant it.
"I know you are," You nodded. "But you realize you've said that to me every night for the past three weeks...how many more weeks are we gonna do this, Kayce?"
"Things just got more complicated once we got out to Darby," Kayce wasn't trying to explain, it was more like he was trying to tell himself it wasn't entirely his fault.
"Things always get complicated," You felt more emotions coming to your surface. "You're always gonna be needed, baby...your job will never not be on. You're too good at it, you're needed too much by the State of Montana...but I just wish sometimes..."
"What?" Kayce asked you.
"I don't know," You reached up and ran your hands back against your cheeks.
"Tell me," Kayce pressed.
"I just wish I could be as important as Montana is sometimes," You sighed. "A-And I know how selfish that is...don't think I don't know that everything you do is important to someone, there's a reason you're doing it...I just feel-"
"That I'm not with you," Kayce said softly.
"I can't tell you the last time I got to kiss you," You said. "Sure, you kiss me goodbye in the mornings on the cheek but I'm half asleep...and I'm trying to think, but I can't remember that last time I got to actually, fully kiss you."
Kayce leaned back with a deep sigh, his eyes looking toward the ground as he thought for a moment.
"I just feel like I haven't seen you lately," You continued. "I just feel so distant from you, and I hate it...I just want to see you more, spend time with you...I know that sounds silly but-"
"It was after I came back from dropping Tate off," Kayce said, his eyes looking up into yours.
"What?" You asked him.
"The last time you kissed me," Kayce nodded. "It was late...and I got back from dropped Tate off from being up at Cowboy Camp for a while, and I crawled into bed with you. You rolled over on me and kissed me. You were sleepy and you smelled like that lavender shampoo you have...and you kissed me."
"That was...like almost twenty days ago," You tried to count in your head. "Kayce...I haven't kissed you in twenty days?"
"I know," Kayce hung his head.
"I know this job is important to you," You sighed.
"not more than you are," Kayce looked at you.
"Are you sure about that?" You asked him.
You weren't being cruel; it was a question that had been eating away at the back of your mind for a while now. You wouldn't necessarily blame Kayce if it were true, but if it was true something was going to have to change.
Kayce surprised you, throwing the flowers in his hand off to the side. They hit the wall and scattered all around. Your eyes were wide as you looked back over at him.
"Look, obviously I'm shit at showing it to you," He sighed. "But you are one of the two most important people in my life."
You closed your mouth slowly.
"And I'm sorry I'm picked the job over you for the past few weeks, I really am," Kayce nodded. "Let me...let me prove to you that's true though. Give me the chance to prove that you are more important than any job I could have."
"Kayce," You breathed out.
"I'm sorry," Kayce's eyes were hazy as he looked at you. "I just get caught up, my men need help, and time slips away and not that any of that is an excuse...but I promise to be better about it, I promise."
"I don't want you to not do what you love," You reached out with your hand and held the side of his face.
"You're what I love," Kayce said. "I'd give up everything for you."
"I don't want you to give up anything, baby," You scooted closer to him. "I just...need a little more work life balance, I guess? I need a little more Kayce here with me."
"I can do that," Kayce nodded. "I will do that."
"I want you to want that though," You smiled at him.
"I want you," Kayce said. "Everything else can fuck off."
You giggled as you pulled his face closer to yours. The scruff of his beard scratched against your cheek as your lips met. Kayce's arm wrapped around you as he deepened the kiss.
"You have a lot of making up to do," You mumbled against his lips.
"Still your birthday in fucking California," Kayce let his fingers tangle in your ponytail.
"Maybe," You gave him a heated kiss. "But I don't have the Livestock commissioner of California in my bed right now."
"Thank God," Kayce pushed you back against your pillows, leaning his body over yours. "They certainly don't know how to make love to a woman."
You snorted as his lips pressed against your neck.
It turned out to be a happy birthday ending indeed.
