Request - I need a sister or younger brother to Tate when they are getting bullied so Tate gets into a fight and Kayce rushes over with his girlfriend and Kayce's girlfriend says our kids shouldn't have to be in trouble they did the right thing to the principal Kayce Mr. Dutton just stares at her.
You held onto the door as Kayce gunned his truck down the road toward Tate's school. He was going way too fast, but about twenty minutes ago he got a call that Tate had been in a fight. So he grabbed you from where you had been helping with cleaning out the bunkhouse and next thing you knew you were headed toward the elementary school.
"Okay..." You tried to speak calmly. "Tell me again what the principal told you."
"That Tate punched some kid," Kayce barked.
"That doesn't make any sense," You frowned. "Tate's not...he's no like that. Tate's kind and quiet and he wouldn't just punch some kid out of the blue."
"That's what I said," Kayce sighed.
"We'll figure it out," You reached over and held his arm.
You could feel the tension in his muscles. Kayce pulled up right in front of the school and turned the truck off, getting out. You glanced around, knowing this technically wasn't a parking spot but got out anyway and followed him inside.
"I'm looking for Tate Dutton?" Kayce asked the receptionist at the front desk.
"Mr. Dutton?" An older man stepped out from a room down a small hallway.
"Yes," Kayce and you both looked at the man.
"I'm Principal Willaims," The man walked forward and held out his hand.
"Where's my son?" Kayce asked, ignoring the handshake.
"He's right this way," Mr. Williams led you both back to a room where Tate was sitting at a large table.
"Dad?" Tate looked up at both of you though.
"The fuck happened?" Kayce asked.
"Kayce," You wanted to at least try and be civil in the beginning.
"Tate?" Mr. Williams looked at Tate. "Would you like to tell them what happened?"
All eyes were now on Tate as he looked like he was about to throw up. You frowned, knowing he was nervous. This was Tate, he was the best kid and you hated he had someone gotten into this situation.
"Uh..." Tate stuttered.
"What happened, Tate?" Kayce asked.
"I didn't do it on purpose," Tate started.
"Did he just walk into your fist?" Kayce asked.
You placed your hand on Kayce's back.
"What made you hit another kid, Tate?" You asked gently.
Tate looked at you and blinked slowly.
"He uh...he said something mean," Tate told you.
"Can you tell us what he said?" You tried to keep calm and understanding.
"He said that Gracie and I ain't siblings," Tate said. "Since you ain't my mom, she's better than me."
You were even more confused, but you saw the tears well up in Tate's eyes. Grace was the five-year-old little girl you had with Kayce. There was about a four-year age difference between her and Tate, but she and Tate had an incredible bond between them. You glanced at the principal who looked slightly surprised as well.
"Tate," Kayce said. "That's why you hit him?"
"I told him he was wrong," Tate explained. "But then he said I was a rez rat and Gracie didn't need me infecting her...I didn't know what it meant but I just got...angry."
You looked back at the principal who was now looking at you.
"Who said this, Tate?" You asked, your eyes not leaving Mr. Williams.
"Barry Clark," Tate said.
"Where's Barry Clark's parents, Mr. Williams?" You asked. "Better yet, where is Berry?"
"He was getting looked at by the nurse," Mr. Williams said.
"So I assume he'll be getting punished as well after he's checked over?" You crossed your arms.
"Uh, well, no," Mr. Williams cleared his throat. "Tate was the one who threw the punch."
"Because of what Berry said," You snapped back. "Our kid did the right thing...he defended his little sister after he told this Barry kid to stop."
"Barry Clark didn't throw a punch, Mrs. Dutton," Mr. Williams said.
"Ain't our fault the Clarks raised a pussy," Kayce grunted from behind you and this time you didn't shush him.
"Mr. Williams," You took a step closer to him. "Tate didn't do anything that any of us wouldn't have done in a similar situation. In fact, I'd say Tate showed restraint regarding what Barry said to him. Something so cruel should be dealt with immediately though, we wouldn't want Barry to think you approve of his behavior no...would we?"
"Mrs. Dutton," Mr Williams swallowed hard.
"Do you approve of Barry Clarks' words?" You asked.
"No ma'am," Mr. Williams said. "But I think-"
"Then I don't understand why we're all still standing here," You interrupted. "So we'll take our son now, thank you."
You held out your hand to Tate who quickly walked around the table and grabbed it. You knew Kayce would be behind you as you walked back down the hall to the receptionist's desk. The woman looked up at you.
"I need to pick up Grace Dutton a little bit early today," You told her sweetly.
"Sure, ma'am," The woman nodded. "I'll get her brought up soon."
You felt Kayce's hand on your back and looked up at him. He smiled at you as the three of you waited until Grace walked into the office with a hall monitor. She smiled when she saw it was all three of you.
Kayce picked Grace up into his arms and carried her out behind you and Tate. The four of you got into Kayce's truck and started driving back to the ranch. You looked back at Tate in the backseat.
"How you doing back there?" You asked him.
"Fine," He smiled at you.
"Why are we leaving early?" Gace asked out loud.
"I punched a kid," Tate told her.
"Hey!"
"Tate!"
You and Kayce both glanced back at him.
"What?" Tate shrugged.
"Why'd you punch a kid?" Grace asked him.
"No one punched anyone, Gracie," You spoke up above everyone. "We don't punch people...it's not nice."
"Daddy punches people," Grace said and you glared at Kayce.
He was trying to not laugh as he looked at you before looking at Grace in the rearview mirror.
"I punch bad guys, darlin'...evil guys who need to be put into jail," Kayce told her. "But we don't...punch regular people."
You rolled your eyes at how ridiculous Kayce sounded. The four of you got back to the ranch and Grace and Tate ran into the main house in front of you and Kayce.
"We don't punch regular people?" You asked him.
"You and I both know all of us would have punched anyone who said that to Tate," Kayce raised an eyebrow at you.
"Oh, I'd have massacred him," You nodded. "You don't mess with our kids."
Kayce wrapped an arm around your waist, pressing a kiss to your forehead, as the two of you walked inside the house.
