Seven Months Later

The mountains still had snow on their peaks, but it was springtime in Western Montana. There were hints of wildflowers when you would drive past the rolling hills and pastures. You could take a deep breath and not feel the cold wind down in your lungs.

Currently, you were looking out a large window, your left arm propped up as it had been during your clinic visits for the past seven months. The clear blue sky was calming to you though, as you were alone this time. While you had been alone before, typically Kayce was next to you. But today he was called out on assignment to the Reservation.

You took a deep breath and looked down at the IV attached to your arm. There were small bruises around it, having graced your skin for the past seven months from the treatment. It didn't hurt, but it wasn't pretty to look at. Once, a woman asked you in the store if you needed help when you were with Kayce. You almost cried with how hard he took you telling him once you were both in the truck afterward.

You then thought about Kayce. He had been everything to you during your treatment. He was his usual caring, something only you seemed to see since he was either heir to the Dutton Ranch or Livestock Commissioner outside the walls of your bedroom. But he also learned little things, like switching sides in the bed because it was more comfortable for you to lay on your right side now. Or getting you the certain kind of electorate drinks to help you, even though he hated the taste. No matter what was needed, Kayce had stepped up and delivered for you.

Not that you hadn't been before, but you were head over heels in love with that man. A beeping above you made your hazy mind clear as you looked up to the machine that accompanied your IV bag. A nurse walked over to you.

"Alright, Y/N," You are done. "How are we feeling?"

"Good," You smiled up at her.

The past month or so you had been feeling better. It was like your doctors had told you, eventually and with medicine, you would start to feel better and get to a point where it was like you didn't have anything at all. It had just been a long seven months.

"Okay," The nurse cleaned up your arm. "Well..."

You waited as she checked your chart. The nurse smiled brightly at you, throwing you off slightly.

"Hey...you're done," She said.

"I'm what?" You asked.

"Done," She nodded. "This was your last treatment."

"What?" You sat up in your chair.

"You have completed this treatment," She checked the chart again. "You'll have to go to Billings in four weeks for a checkup but if nothing's there then you won't have to come back for a year."

"I'm...done?" You blinked.

"Feels good, I bet?" The nurse smiled again.

"Uh...yeah," You nodded slowly.

You weren't sure how to take this news. Sure, it was great, but you had spent a long time now in this constant 'funk' that if felt weird to not be in it.

"Did you drive here or is Kayce waiting?" The nurse asked.

"No, I drove," You stood up slowly.

"You alright to drive back?" She asked you.

"Yeah, sure," You forced a smile. "Sorry, just a lot to take."

"This is good news, Y/N," She held your arm gently.

"Yeah," You smiled again at her and made your way out of the clinic.

Once you got in your car you called Kayce.

"Hye?" He answered. "Everything go okay?"

"Yeah..." You sighed.

"What's wrong?" Kayce asked, concerned.

"Nothing's wrong," You shook your head, a smile growing on your lips. "In fact...it's great."

"...Alright?" Kayce said. "Then why are you sounding weird?"

"Guess this is how someone sounds who's done with treatment," You said and bit your lip.

Kayce was quite for a few seconds. You waited for him to register just want you had told him.

"You're done?"

You could hear the smile in Kayce's words.

"Yep," You laughed. "I have to go back to Billings in four weeks for testing but for right now, I'm done!"

"...Baby," Kayce whispered.

"I know," You nodded, your eyes getting teary. "It doesn't mean I'm done, and I could have flare ups for the rest of my life but at least we know this treatment works."

"Where are you?" Kayce asked.

"Leaving the clinic," You put your car in drive.

"I'll meet you at the house," Kayce said and you heard movement from his end.

"Kayce...it's okay," You laughed. "Don't leave mid-call."

"I'll see you in forty minutes," Kayce said.

**

When you pulled up to the main house on the ranch, you saw Kayce leaning on his truck waiting for you. Smiling, you climb out of your car and shut your door. Slowly, you walked up to him, the two of you letting out a laugh.

Kayce stepped forward and wrapped his arms around you. You nuzzled into his neck and hugged him back tightly. The two of you stood there for a minute, soaking in the news.

"How are you feeling?" Kayce pulled back slightly.

"I'm okay," You smiled. "Feel pretty good right now."

"Yeah?" Kayce cupped your cheek.

"Mmhmm," You nodded, reaching up and holding his wrist. "Better now."

"Because you're done?" Kayce smiled.

"Because I'm here with you," You said softly.

Kayce's eyes softened at your words. He took his hat off and leaned his head down to press his lips to yours. You kissed him back, holding onto him. Kayce pulled back again and held your hips.

"I want to thank you for everything," You said, rubbing your hands up and down his arms. "I couldn't have done this without you."

"You'd have been fine," Kayce winked. "But there ain't another place I'd rather be."

"No," You shook your head. "You were at almost every appointment...and you delt with my craziness...you took care of me, loved me...and I don't know what I would have done without you."

Kayce pulled you back into his arms. He hugged you close to him, his hands roaming around your back.

"I'm just glad you're...you're going to be okay," Kayce said softly.

You soaked up another minute in Kayce's arms.

"Oh...and I told you so," Kayce mumbled.

You opened your eyes and leaned back in his arms.

"You told me so?" You questioned.

"Yeah," Kayce smirked. "I wanted you...and I have you...so I told you so."

You rolled your eyes but pulled Kayce down by his shirt.

"You do have me," You said before kissing him.
