Author's note – so I changed it up a little bit...hope that's okay and it's still good!

"You ain't listening to me!" Kayce snarled at you.

Both of you were tired. You knew Kayce was completely drained from having to ride all the way up to the Canadian border with his team and back in the same day. They had to book about a dozen horse thieves and it wasn't easy. Your day hadn't been easy by any means either.

You were a high school teacher, history to juniors and seniors. There was a fight in your class today that led to a lockdown because one of the kids had a gun. It turned out to not be loaded, but that was after the fear of God had been put into you, police barricaded your hallway, and you had to stand with a kid pointing it at your other student for almost an hour.

When Kayce got home, he didn't know any of this. All you wanted was for him to hold you and tell you everything would be okay and to go back to school after the weekend. But he was tired and grouchy and snapped at you for being clingy.

"I'm tired of listening," You yelled back at him. "I've listened to you be a dick for the past hour, I've listened to my students yell at each other, police yell down the hallway...I'm tired of the noise and I just wanted an evening of nonsense and to be an escaped."

"You and me both, baby," Kayce rolled his eyes despite the term of endearment.

You glared at him for a moment before turning on your heels, grabbing your jacket by the door and opening the front door.

"Where're you going?" You heard Kayce asked but you had already slammed the door.

You walked down the dirt road to the bunkhouse. The lights were on and even though it was cooler at night, the windows were open. You could hear music coming in and when you get closer, you saw them all playing cards and drinking beer. Quietly, you slipped in...Lloyd noticing you after a moment.

"Y/N?" Lloyd asked and the others looked at you.

"Hey," You waved. "Can I just sit with y'all, and this not be like the boss's girlfriend is here, so we have to behave...type of thing?"

They all glanced at each other before their eyes fell on Rip. He was looking at you, analyzing you. Another five seconds went by before he pulled out the empty chair next to him. You smiled, walking over, and sitting down between him and Walker. They continued with their game, someone pushing a beer in front of you.

"Everything okay?" Rip asked lowly for only you to hear.

"I just needed a break," You sighed.

He nodded and that was that between the two of you.

Two hours later and almost all of them were all drunk. You were laughing at something Teeter said to Colby when you heard some scuffling next to you. Lloyd and Walker were fighting, pushing each other. You tried to move, stumbling over you chair as Ryan and Rip tried to break them up. But then Lloyd pulled a knife and one of the barrel racers screamed and you didn't move in time.

"Ah!" You gasped as the knife sliced into your cheek.

You turned away and held your face in your hands as the crowd grew quiet.

"Y/N!" You heard someone say.

"Get the fuck away!" Rip snapped and you felt his hand on your shoulder. "Ryan, call the vet."

You winced as your palm touched the cut.

"Easy," Rip held onto your wrist." Can you let me see it?"

As soon as his eyes saw it, Rip placed your hand back over your cheek.

"Keep some pressure on it," Rip sighed. "You're gonna need some stiches.

"Y/N..." Lloyd tried to walk over.

"Get out," Rip snapped. "Everyone, get the fuck out!"

"Vet's on his way," Ryan said.

"Go get Kayce," Rip nodded.

Rip got you back down into one of the chairs and walked over to the sink. Your eyes followed him as he brought back a wet cloth and you let him press it to the cut, wincing again as the pain.

"This is why I don't like you in the bunkhouse," Rip sighed, leaning back, and letting you hold the cloth.

You nodded your head slowly.

"This day has been shit," You muttered, the door to the bunkhouse swinging open.

"The fuck happened? Kayce asked.

Your eyes looked up into his worried face as he leaned down to look at yours.

"Drunk wranglers and she got in the middle," Rip said.

"The fuck was she doing in the middle?" Kayce's eyes glared over at Rip.

"Kayce," You said softly.

"It was an accident," Rip muttered.

"Who did it?" Kayce asked him.

"No one," You stepped in and made them both look at you, but you focused on Kayce. "It was an accident."

"That you shouldn't have even been here for," Kayce frowned, and you could tell he was trying to keep calm.

"Because you were being a dick to me," You said, but your words weren't harsh like earlier. "Things just got heated and...I'm okay."

"Vet's here," Ryan poked his head in.

"See?" You tried to smile. "I'm almost fixed."

Rip silently got up and walked out with Ryan while Kayce took his seat. The stress lines in his face relaxing slightly.

"M'sorry about earlier," Kayce reached up and held your uninjured cheek.

"I know," You nodded.

"Heard more about what happened to you," Kayce's thumb softly rubbed your skin. "Baby, I'm so sorry."

"Think we're both just tried," You shrugged. "Feels like the only time I see you is when you're crawling into bed."

"Yeah," Kayce nodded. "I've noticed that too...what do you wanna do about it?"

"I don't know," You sighed. "Right now, I just wanna crawl into bed."

"Mind if I join you?" Kayce smirked.

You smiled at him.

"Kayce?" Rip was at the door again.

"Yeah," Kayce nodded. "Let him in."

The vet stitched you up and about an hour later you were in Kayce's arms and warm bed.

"You gonna tell me who cut you?" Kayce mumbled against the top of your forehead.

"No," You snuggled into him more. "And Rip ain't either so don't ask him."

"You know he works for me, right?" Kayce asked.

"I do baby," You felt yourself slipping away into sleep. "But he and I are in agreement on this...it was an accident, and you can't afford to lose a wrangler."

"Don't like any of this," Kayce mumbled.

"Not even holding me?" You smiled up at him.

"No I love this," Kayce pulled you closer.
