Request - Part Two of 'You better marry her'

"Careful," You whispered to Tate as he carried in two hot mugs of cocoa.

John was tucked against your side, his head on your lap, as he breathed in and out. He had fallen asleep a few minutes earlier and you didn't have the heart to wake him. Tate handed you both of the mugs and then proceeded to climb in next to you under the blankets.

You let him settle against you before handing him his mug. Tate yawned as he took a sip, telling you a nap for the older kid wasn't too far into the future. You smiled, sipping your own cup, and wrapped your arm around Tate.

"Did you have a good morning?" You asked him softly.

"Yep," Tate nodded, licking his lip.

"Good," You leaned back against the couch, warmed by your little human sandwich. "Your daddy should be home soon."

"Where'd he go?" Tate asked you.

"Had to go into town for something," You shrugged. "Not sure...but he should be back any minute."

"Oh...I know why he went into town," Tate nodded.

You gave him a curious look.

"Why'd he go into town?" You asked Tate.

"Uh..." Tate's eyes blinked up at you. "I can't tell you."

"You can't tell me?" You raised your eyebrow. "Tate Dutton...why can you not tell me?"

"Because," Tate looked nervous.

"We don't keep secrets in this family," You reminded him, although you were calling yourself a hypocrite inside your mind.

"I promised him," Tate defended himself.

"Promised who?" You asked, sitting your mug down on the table behind the couch.

"Dad," Tate looked down at his own mug.

You reached over and raised Tate's chin up so he was looking at you.

"Is your dad okay?" You asked, trying to remove the biggest fear that could come from whatever Kayce was doing.

"Yeah," Tate nodded.

"Is it scary?" You asked.

"I don't think so," Tate shook his head.

"Then why can't you tell me?" You asked.

"Stop interrogating my son," Kayce walked into the living room with a smirk on his face.

"I didn't tell her, dad!" Tate said.

"Shush," Kayce nodded toward John still sleeping.

Kayce walked over and sat on the coffee table in front of where you were cuddling up with the boys. He sent Tate a wink and you were even more curious now.

"Where've you been?" You asked Kayce. "Why do I feel like I'm out of the know on something?"

Kayce looked over at Tate.

"Did you get it?" Tate asked his father.

"Get what?" You looked back and forth between them.

"Yeah, son," Kayce reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small black box.

Your eyes looked at the box in Kayce's hands.

"Can I see?" Tate asked as he scooted to the end of the couch.

"She needs to see it first," Kayce laughed at Tate's eagerness.

"Oh right," Tate nodded. "You gotta ask the question."

"What is going on?" You asked as you looked at Kayce. "What is this?"

Kayce smiled at you, his eyes looking into yours lovingly as he moved. Bending one of his knees down in front of you, he placed his hand on your thigh. You reached out and held onto his arms, still not following him. The four of you were as close as you could be to each other now. Tate clung to your side with a large smile on his face.

You glanced at John who was still curled into your lap, sleeping away. Kayce reached out and brushed his hair back from his face before placing his hand back on your thigh.

"Kayce?" You waited a few seconds.

"Y/N...I didn't think anyone was gonna be able to come into this life, with me and my boys, and fit," Kayce cleared his throat.

Your eyes got slightly bigger.

"Then you brought this sense of calm over a pretty chaotic house," Kayce smiled at you. "And I can't think of someone more perfect for me...for us."

You felt Tate's grip on your arm tighten but you couldn't look away from Kayce. He reached down and opened the box in his hand.

Inside was a simple gold band, anchored by a marquis diamond in the center. There were two green stones on either side of it, completing it. You felt your heart stop beating.

"I can't do this without you," Kayce said, making you look back at him. "And I don't want to...I want you with me, forever from this point on...so, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?"

Kayce looked nervous as you took in his words. The past two years had been a lot of ups and downs, but everything had been worth it when you knew Kayce loved you. It was Kayce who made it all worth it and looking into his eyes now, you knew your answer.

"Yes," You said gently, reaching out and cupping Kayce's cheeks. "Yes, I'll be your wife. Yes."

Kayce's lips pressed against yours as you heard Tate cheer next to you. You kissed Kayce again, then his cheek before you hugged his neck tight. Kayce's arm held you closer to him for a few seconds.

You pulled back and looked down as Kayce took the ring out of the box and slid it on your finger. Tate leaned in close to look at it while you kissed the top of his head.

"The little green stones are me and John," Tate looked up at you.

"Oh?" You felt your eyes water. "Really?"

"Mmhmm," Tate nodded. "Dad got you the big one but those are ours."

"Thanks, buddy," Kayce rubbed Tate's back.

"I love it," You smiled, a few tears escaping. "It's beautiful...the prettiest ring I've ever seen."

Tate smiled up at you.

An hour later

Tate was passed out along with John on the couch. The hard playing earlier, mixed with the excitement of Kayce's proposal, knocked them both out. You had come back from putting the mugs up and saw Kayce looking out the window at the snow beginning to fall.

You walked up to him and wrapped your arms around his waist from behind. Kayce looked back at you over his shoulder. His thumb rubbed against the ring on your finger.

"You sure you want me forever, cowboy?" You asked him softly.

"I want you for longer," Kayce brought his arm up and wrapped it around you, bringing you against his side more as you looked up at him.

"I love you, Kayce," You told him. "I love your boys too."

"We love you," Kayce leaned down and kissed you.
