Request - what if Y/N comes from a well-meaning but dysfunctional family (critical and always trying to micromanage her even though it's not necessary and she has grown up) she wants to build a life with Kayce and he helps her stand up to her family like tell them to mind their own business, respect Y/N decisions. Like she stands up to her family and moves out and he supports her telling her family to back off.

"We could do this tomorrow," Kayce offered as he looked over from the driver's seat. "No one said it had to be today."

"If I don't do this now, they'll never let me go," You muttered, your eyes trained on your phone.

Kayce let out a deep breath but settled back in his seat. They were at the entrance to the Dutton Ranch, Kayce's truck full of your things. Last week Kayce had asked you to move in with him, officially. You'd basically been living with him for about a year now, but with the last box of yours placed in the bed of his truck, this time it felt real.

The problem was your family.

It wasn't that they didn't like Kayce, they enjoyed him well enough. But they didn't like the Dutton name and all the problems that came from being associated with that name. And try as Kayce might, he would always be a Dutton and the son of infamous, John Dutton. Your parents would have talks with you all the time about seeing if "this thing" with Kayce would last. Your grandmother, who had known Kayce's grandmother, wouldn't speak to Kayce when he'd come around your family. They didn't want you throwing your life away for some "cowboy" who would only break your heart in the end.

Well, you'd been dating Kayce for four years now and there had been very little heartbreak, mostly from his father by associate and not from Kayce directly. So when he had asked you to move in with him, with the promise of a ring soon, there was no hesitation in your voice when you answered yes.

You packed up your things in the tiny guest cabin on your family's property and now you waited at the entrance to the Dutton Ranch because you knew your parents would be here soon...probably angrier than all get out. As if on cue, you saw your father's truck coming in off the highway.

"I knew it," You muttered, looking at Kayce.

"You're your own person, Y/N," Kayce told you. "The only one who gets to make a decision here is you...don't let them, or me for that matter, dictate how you're going to live your life."

"See that's the thing," You smiled as you opened your door. "You are my life, Kayce."

Kayce smiled at you and opened his door to get out with you. The two of you walked to the front of Kayce's truck and waited for your father to pull up near it. Both he and your mother got out, glares on their faces. You had left a note for them, but you knew it wouldn't matter what you said in writing.

"This some kind of joke to you?" Your father asked Kayce. "You can't just steal our daughter during the middle of the afternoon."

"Didn't steal anything," Kayce said, his voice low and calm.

"Y.N...honey, what's going on?" Your mother asked.

"I'm moving in with Kayce, Mom," You told her. "We're starting our life together and this is what I want."

"You don't know what you want," Your father said to you. "You're a child."

"She's twenty-seven, sir," Kayce interrupted. "I think she's entitled to her own opinion."

"This is all your fault," Your father pointed at Kayce.

"Y/N...we told you he'd try to control your life," Your mother frowned.

"He's not controlling anything," You shook your head. "And the only thing Kayce's done is make me fall in love with him."

You could see Kayce look at you.

"This is my life, my choice," You shrugged. "I know you don't like it...don't agree with me or whatever. But it's my choice."

"Honey, we can help you find something for yourself," Your father said. "If you don't want to live on our farm, then we can get you a place in town."

"I want here," You looked at Kayce and smiled before looking back at your parents. "I'm going to live with Kayce."

"You're making a mistake," Your father said.

"That's your opinion," You told him. "But I know what I'm doing...I just hope one day you can see that and accept my choices."

You knew they were still too angry to see what you were doing was for yourself and not to hurt them in any way. Your mother had tears in her eyes, but you chose to focus on the fact you were finally standing up for yourself for the first time and what you wanted.

"What is he gonna do for you," Your father asked, glaring at Kayce.

"Everything I can," Kayce said and you looked up at him.

Kayce had grown over the past few years. You had enjoyed the growing period together with him, creating a small family of sorts with his son, Tate. Kayce was loyal, kind...and would do anything for those he loved. He was a good boyfriend to you and you knew one day he'd be a great husband.

"Daddy," You looked at your father. "I love him."

"But he's..." Your father didn't finish and you took that as a good sign.

"She made this decision," Kayce said. "I'm just supporting her."

"I bet you are," Your father huffed.

"You know," Kayce took a few steps toward your father and your smile faltered. "This is my property...I'd like for you to show Y/N respect as long as you're on my property. If you're not able to do that then you can get back in your truck and back off."

Your father's eyes widened and you suddenly saw a new emotion in his eyes. Your father was scared of Kayce, how you hadn't seen that before was beyond you. Your father took a deep breath and glanced at you before looking at his wife and nodding for her to get back in the truck. Your mother looked at you one last time before leaving with your father.

You knew you'd talk to them again, but it'd take some time for everyone to cool off. You watched them drive back to the highway and turn away from sight.

"You okay?" Kayce asked you softly.

You looked back at him.

"Yeah," You smiled. "I'm okay...thank you for standing up for me."

"You didn't need me," Kayce smirked. "You were doing okay yourself there, killer."

You giggled.

"Guess you can't make me leave now," You stepped closer to him. "Hope you really wanted me."

"I've wanted you for a long time," Kayce held your hips.

You wrapped your arms around his neck and smiled.

"Then let's go home, cowboy," You said right before your lips met Kayce's.
