Basically, I'm in 8th grade, and soon we're going to have to choose which high schools to go to soon. Our county has high schools with special magnet programs, and, being the driven and determined student that I am, I really want to be in a magnet.
So let's say that there are two schools that I want to go to: school A and school B. Basically, my dilemma is choosing a school.
School A is the 5th best school in the state, and B is the 9/10th best. All my friends are likely going to B, but I really really want to go to A. I know I can still keep in touch with my friends even if we go to different schools, but two friends keep trying to convince me to NOT to go to A. I know they just want me to hang out with them in HS, but they keep talking about how competitive A is, and honestly, their annoying discouragement just makes me want to go there more. I feel like they should be supportive of the fact that I really want to go to A, and frankly it's a bit insulting that they don't think I can handle the competition. They know I'm probably one of the "nerdiest" kids in our group of friends.
So, I know that was a lot to take in, I really just wanted to know how to tell them to just stop talking about it. I really want to just say "shut the f*** up" but I know that it's probably not a good idea. How do I let them know that I still want to be friends in HS, but my studies and uni options come first?
Thanks,
The Confused Nerd

Dear The Confused Nerd,
Well I would just tell them why you want to go there in the first place and reassure them that you guys will keep in contact. And initially it's your choice and not theirs so even if they don't agree to you going to school A, you don't have to listen to them. Just tell them that and that you they need to understand that it's your future on the line and you know what you are doing.
