Psychogenic mutism. That's the technical term for what you've struggled with for several years now. It often leaves a lot of questions for someone who might be on the outside looking in, especially when you're in the position you're in.
In your very late teens, you were involved in an accident and it left it's mark on you permanently. This was around the time that you and Taylor began dating. For everyone, it was confusing why you wouldn't speak. People thought it would be just a temporary thing; something caused by the shock and the trauma. But you haven't spoken since that night. Not even to your wife.
Taylor is the most supportive person in your life. She always has been. And though it was scary and a huge thing to have to adjust to, she never once forced you to speak. She tried her best to see things from your point of view. She couldn't imagine how traumatizing the accident was and how it made you feel. So she's worked with you every day since. She's given you different forms of communication; through notes or voice apps on your phone. It might not have been your voice, but she's always been grateful you've never shut her out.
People have judged you in the past though. Random strangers that come up to you asking for the time or some fans that might recognize you but don't understand that you won't talk; they find it strange and some find it rude. But you hoped, deep down, that if they ever went through something so traumatic they'd understand.
The media was not understanding though. The names they call you and the things they say about you are hurtful. But Taylor reminds you to ignore them. They don't know you. they didn't have to go through what you did. Your reason for not wanting to speak was valid and she never let you forget that.
But then, a few years after going mute and a couple of years after you and Taylor got married, your daughter came along. It was all unplanned and a little scary. Taylor didn't know how things would go, how you'd end up feeling. But everything went smoothly.
Taylor would sing to your little girl and part of you wanted to do the same. But after being mute for so long, you were more terrified to speak than ever. So you stayed silent, but you've always been a good mother to that little girl who stole your heart from the moment you had her.
You wanted to tell her that most days. But you couldn't. Of course, she was too young to read so there weren't many ways of expressing it besides giving that small girl lots of hugs and kisses and making her feel that love you've always had for her, since the moment you found out you and Taylor would be parents.
But your little girl grew up, and fast. Though only six, she knows something isn't quite right. She's curious as to why Taylor will speak to her but you won't. "I'm going to the store. Love you" you wrote to Taylor who smiled at you and gave you a kiss before you kissed your little girl goodbye and went to get some things you needed.
Violet, your little six-year-old girl, sat at the table coloring a picture in her book while Taylor stood at the stove making her some lunch. "Mommy?" Taylor turned at the sweet voice and looked at Violet with a smile. "Yes, sweetheart?"
"Why doesn't mommy speak?" Taylor turned the stove off and put the sandwich on a plate in front of her. She knelt in front of her on the floor and ran her fingers through Violet's blonde curls. "It's a long story, baby. It's very complicated. See... your mom was involved in a scary accident years ago that left her feeling very hurt and afraid. To cope with the trauma, she stopped talking. Your grandparents and everyone thought it was something that would pass with time... I guess, maybe, deep down, I hoped it would be too. But I know how scary it must've been for your mom and I could never judge her or hold that against her. We all cope with scary and sometimes hurtful things in different ways. This is just how your mom copes."
Taylor watched a tear fall from violet's eyes. "Is she still hurting?" Taylor kissed the small girl's forehead. "I don't know, honey. But there is something I do know and that is that your mom loves you so much and she'd do anything for you. She's always loved you. She doesn't need a voice to tell you that when she shows it so well, right? She gives you lots of cuddles and kisses. When you're hurt she wipes away your tears and kisses your skinned hand or knee. She holds you in bed every night when I read you a story. Your mom loves you so much" Taylor smiled "And so do I." She said before tickling the small girl's sides making them both laugh as she squirmed around.
Taylor and Violet were watching cartoons on the couch when you came home from the store. You set the groceries on the counter when a pair of small arms wrapped around your legs. You looked down to see Violet hugging you, tears in her bright blue eyes that she inherited from her mom. She was practically Taylor's twin.
You bent down and picked her up. you put her on your hip and rubbed her back as she sniffled and buried her face in your neck. "Love you, mommy. Mommy told me why you don't talk and I just want you to know I love you."
You smiled and put your hand on her back to push her a little closer. Taylor got up from the couch and was walking over to you.
But something felt different at that moment. It was like everything hit you all in that one moment. And the love you have your two favorite girls was overriding all of your fears about speaking. And you started to cry as Taylor held you. Then, all at once, it came out.
"I... I love you too." It was quiet and soft. Barely noticeable. But your girls heard you, loud and clear. Taylor grabbed your chin and looked into your eyes. "Can you say it again?" You chuckled nervously and it took you a minute to get that courage up to talk again. But you did.
"I love you. I love you both. A lot." Taylor started to cry, your voice may be the most beautiful sound she's ever heard. "I love you." She smiled and gazed into your eyes. You looked away from her to look at the little girl in your arms.
"Mommy?" She asked as if she was in shock. "Yeah..." you tucked a curl behind her ear as she started to sob and wrapped her arms around your neck. "Love you" she cried and clung to you. "My beautiful girls... I love you both." You said, dropping a kiss to Violet's head and then kissing Taylor's cheek.
Your fear was nothing compared to the love you feel for your daughter and your wife who love you unconditionally. You wouldn't rush yourself to talk to everyone, but that was okay. Because at the end of the day, it's your little family that loves you the most.
