You wrapped your daughter's jacket tighter around her shoulders as a cold wind blew.
The snowstorm had hit hard last night leading to a blanket of white today. Being only five, Isabella wanted nothing more than to spend the day out in the snow with you and Taylor.
So that's exactly what you've been doing.
And although you're really cold, your heart felt so warm to see Isabella laugh and smile so much as she made snow angels and threw snowballs at Taylor.
Your thoughts were interrupted by her small hand slipping out of yours and her voice ringing out.
"Look!" She yelled out excitedly and pointed over to the frozen lake nearby. You and Taylor exchanged worried looks, already knowing what she was getting at. It looked like innocent fun to a small child, the real danger something they couldn't really grasp.
But you knew. Taylor knew. And you know Isabella is a very curious little girl and her curiosity always gets the best of her.
Taylor went to pick her up when she suddenly started to run down the small hill and to the frozen lake. Your feet were starting to move on their own as you chased after her. She was already in the center of the ice by the time you even got to the edge of it.
And just when it seemed like things couldn't get any worse, they did.
You heard the dreadful and terrifying sound of the ice starting to crack beneath her feet. You heard her whimper fearfully and you didn't think twice before rushing to her.
Taylor was following right behind you and had reached the edge right as you grabbed ahold of her and managed to slide her away just in time. The ice cracked the rest of the way and within a split second, you plummeted under the freezing water.
It all happened in the blink of an eye. You tried to get out of the freezing water right away, but in a moment of panic you couldn't find the hole you had fallen through.
The more you panicked the more you couldn't breathe which made you sink further down. You were desperately trying to find the hole but you were working yourself into a frenzy and soon, everything turned black.
"Y/n! Y/n!" Taylor yelled out your name over and over again. She had come onto the ice to help you as soon as she saw you go under. She was trying to stay calm for you and for Isabella, who was watching from a distance scared out of her mind.
It took Taylor a few more minutes before she caught a glimpse of you under the ice. "Y/n!" She yelled again, this time much more panicky and desperate.
She looked around and saw a tree branch hanging low to the ground. She carefully but quickly ran to it and started to break the ice, a few grunts leaving her lips in the process.
She could hear Isabella crying and it took everything in her not to do the same.
The ice finally broke and Taylor reached in to pull you out. She gently laid you on your back and gasped when she saw your blue lips. She grabbed your wrist and felt around for a pulse. It was weak under her fingertips.
She pressed her lips to yours and started to push on your chest. "Come on y/n, come back to me." She mumbled against your lips as she pulled away for a breath of her own but started breathing for you again a few seconds later.
Your eyes shot open and Taylor pulled back. You started to cough aggressively, water spewing from your mouth each time. "That's good, y/n. Get it out," She stroked your cold cheek and let you catch your breath.
The sound of a loud cry caused Taylor to turn her head. Isabella stood back with tears running down her cheeks, her small hands nervously toying with her zipper. "It's okay, honey. C'mere, just be careful."
When she was close enough Taylor grabbed her and sat her by you. She looped her small arms around your neck and sobbed, her tiny hands clutching your soaking wet shirt tightly.
"It's okay, I'm alright," You put your hand on her back and started to shiver. "We need to get you home and into bed." You slowly stood and Taylor held onto you as you leaned on her. You held onto Isabella's hand and counted down the seconds till you'd get home.
Taylor hurried to unlock the door and guide you inside. She got you out of your wet clothes and into some warm ones. She and Isabella grabbed as many blankets as they could find and covered you up. "Warm enough?" Taylor checked your fingers and toes to make sure they were returning to normal. She was relieved to see that they weren't blue anymore.
The feeling of a soft fabric brushing along your cheek made you look over at your daughter who had climbed into bed beside you and put her favorite blanket that she used every night by you.
"Thank you, my sweet girl." You ran your hands through her soft hair and watched her smile a little.
Even though you had been absolutely terrified and still weren't all the way warmed up yet, as you stared at Isabella, the little girl that was a perfect mixture of you and Taylor and has had you wrapped around her finger from the day she was born, you'd do it all again in a heartbeat in order to keep her safe.
"Okay, Izzy. Let's give mommy some cuddles till she falls asleep," Taylor said and they both curled up beside you, kissing both of your now much warmer cheeks and holding onto you tightly till you soon fell asleep.
You woke up a few hours later to a little hand shaking your shoulder. Upon opening your eyes you saw Taylor and Isabella sitting beside you with a tray of food, full of your favorites.
"What's this?" You sat up and pulled your giggly daughter onto your lap. "We made you dinner and a card!"
You looked over at Taylor who was grinning at you. "We figured we'd do something special for you. After what you did today, you deserved it. It's just our way of saying thank you."
She leaned forward and kissed across your face. And when she pulled away you kissed Isabella on her forehead and started to comb your fingers through her hair.
"Open it!" Isabella squealed as she pushed the card into your hand.
You couldn't really read what it said but the drawing of the three of you that she had clearly been done by her made your heart melt. "Thank you, my loves." You kissed them both and started to eat the delicious dinner they made for you, and of course, you shared it with them too.
You were grateful that things turned out this way. Because you couldn't imagine missing out on moments like these with your beautiful little family.
