Taylor chewed on her lip and watched you raise your hand to turn the knob on the door. "Wait!" You sighed and turned to look at her, again. "Are you sure they'll like me?" You chuckled and adjusted Carter who was resting on your hip.
Taylor's meeting your parents for the first time tonight and to say she's anxious about it is an understatement. "Taylor, I told you already. They're gonna love you." She looked into your eyes before looking at Carter. His head was on your shoulder and his arms were around your neck.
Taylor's thoughts are racing and she can't get them to stop. This is the most serious she's ever been about someone before. Not because she loves you, but because she loves Carter, too. Only six months and she's attached to him, just like he is to her.
"You're sure?" You kissed her cheek, your lips lingering for a second and Taylor couldn't help but smile. "I'm absolutely positive. You trust me, right?" She nodded. "Good. Then trust me right now." You held your free hand out for her, your other one resting on Carter's back as he slept soundly on your shoulder.
Taylor took it and opened the door for you to go inside. She followed behind you and looked around your parents' house, taking in the details - big and small.
"There she is!" She heard someone say before they appeared in front of you both. Your mom, who you looked just like, pulled you in for a hug but was careful not to wake Carter in the process. Your dad did the same, a wide smile on his face when he had you in his arms.
"Mom, Dad, This is Taylor." You turned to Taylor and looked back between your parents and to her. "Taylor, it's very nice to meet you." Your mom said but Taylor could sense her nerves and it made her nervous too. "Hi, Taylor. How are you?" Your dad asked before running his hand gently across Carter's back, slowly pulling him out of his sleep.
He looked between his grandparents and you before turning his head to look at Taylor. His bottom lip wobbled and he reached his arms out and Taylor happily picked him up. He rubbed his eyes and slowly fell back asleep. And although Taylor was completely in love with the sight of him wanting to be so close, she also didn't miss the look your mom gave your dad.
Dinner was quick and slightly quiet. Taylor didn't know what to expect and this situation wasn't helping her anxiety any. She figured she blew it somehow. Something she did or said, or didn't do or say. She was anxious.
You went up to the room your parents have for Carter when he stays over, deciding to just let him play around for a little while to burn off the energy he had.
Taylor was left alone with your parents. She helped clean up the dishes, scraping off anything left on the plates before putting them in the sink. "Taylor? Can we talk to you for a minute?" Your dad asked and Taylor's heart started to pound, her anxiety higher than ever.
But still, she nodded her head with a nervous smile and let them lead her to the dining room table.
"Is everything okay?" She asked nervously and watched your parents seriously. "What are your intentions here?" Your mom asked, her voice serious and stern. "What do you mean?"
Your dad sighed and bit his lip. "Taylor... we haven't heard or seen our daughter this happy in a really long time. But we're scared for her, and for Carter. Y/n was so in love with Luke," Taylor froze at the mention of your ex's name.
"We thought that he was a really great guy. And for a while, he was. Until y/n got pregnant and he just vanished. She was heartbroken and everything that she had to go through was so much harder on her because she had to go through all those big milestones that should be celebrated with your lover, all on her own. She was devasted..."
Your dad looked over at your mom who was staring at Taylor with a sad look in her eyes. "Taylor, it's not that we don't like you. With everything y/n has told us, we absolutely adore you, and it's clear that Carter does too - which is just as important to us. But please, you have to understand how this is for us. We don't wanna see her go through what she had to go through before, again."
"And your fame. We know that and we know you. We know how busy you are in the studio and with touring. We know it's your job. But it's scary knowing how invasive people are in your life. That's our daughter and our grandson - that's what matters most to us at the end of the day. Please just... tell us honestly if you plan on leaving. We need to know."
By the end of it all, Taylor had tears in her eyes. "I completely understand your worries and your fears. I do. But I love y/n so much, more than I've ever loved anyone. And Carter... gosh, he's just a little ray of sunshine, isn't he?"
Your parents chuckled and nodded their heads.
"I can only imagine how hard that was on you guys. To see y/n have to go through all of that without... him. But he wasn't serious about her and that's what different about me and him. I'm in it for the long run. All I want is them, for the rest of my life. I know we're only a half of a year into our relationship, but they're my everything. I don't know what I'd ever do without them. I promise I won't ever do what he did to her, to him."
She took a deep breath and a tear fell from her eyes. "I know it was hard on her. She was really hesitant to do all of these things like have me meet Carter until she was sure I was serious about accepting not just her, but accepting him too. He stole my heart from the moment I met him. He's an amazing little boy, he definitely is a mini her."
She chuckled and bit at her lip, a wide smile on her face. "I know my job is a lot for people to handle. There's paparazzi and rumors and hate - I see it. I know it's overwhelming and I understand why it freaks people out so much. But I swear to you both that I would never let anything happen to either of them. I try to block out as much hate as I can. I have my team shut down a lot of rumors as soon as they happen, and if they involve y/n or Carter then I don't waste a single second in setting the record straight and letting people know that they're not allowed to mess with my family. I-"
She heard your dad chuckle and it made her freeze. "What?" Your dad smiled at Taylor and put his hand on her shoulder. Tears were in his eyes. "You said my family. Taylor, that is what we wanted to hear. You've said all I wanted to hear. We needed that reassurance."
Taylor elt out a deep breath and your mom sniffled. "You really are a wonderful person. I'm really happy that you're who my daughter is with." Your mom hugged Taylor, taking her by surprise for a second before she relaxed and hugged her back.
She was interrupted from the hug by small footsteps rushing her way. Carter appeared in front of her, immediately he crawled right onto her lap and loped his arms around her neck as he snuggled close to her. Taylor's heart melted as she ran her hand up and down his back soothingly. "Hey, buddy. You doing okay?"
She felt him nod against her shoulder. "He got bored with me and ran right down here to you." You smiled as you came down the stairs and went over to Taylor. You frowned at the tear stains on her cheeks. You knelt in front of her and wiped them away. "Tay? Are you alright?"
She looked back at your parents who smiled and nodded at her. She gave you a quick kiss before kissing Carter's head and smiling. "Yeah. Everything is perfect."
