The pain that you felt in your stomach jolted you awake. You ran your hands across your bump and turned your head to find that Taylor was still sleeping next to you.
You're seven months pregnant, only a couple months away from your little boy entering the world. But the pain you just felt has you on edge now. It was unlike anything you've ever felt before.
You tried to ignore your growing anxiety and rubbed your hands over your cheeks. You closed your eyes and tried to fall back asleep, but when you did the pain returned, this time worse than before. You gasped both from how strong it felt and how sudden it was.
You sat up and shook Taylor's shoulder until she opened her eyes. "Taylor something's wrong!" She turned the lamp on and put her hand on top of yours that rested over your bump. Just then, you felt another pain. And just like last time, it was stronger than before.
You crinkled your nose up in discomfort as something ran down your leg and you and Taylor both knew what it was right away. "We need to get you to the hospital." She panicked, springing into action right away. She didn't worry about packing a bag or grabbing anything besides your wallets, keys, and phones before helping you down to the car and driving off as fast but as safely as possible.
She held your hand the whole time. And even when it felt like things were falling apart, she was anchor, keeping you as calm as possible. She helped you inside and right away you were back in a room with Taylor right by your side.
You shed a few tears together as the doctor explained what was gonna happen once the baby was born. When he left the room to prepare for everything, you broke down as guilt washed over you. "It's my fault." Taylor cupped your chin and shook her head. "No, it's not. Don't say that. It's not your fault at all."
She brushed your tears away and put her hand over your stomach. "Everything's gonna be just fine. We're in this together. Everything you have to, I'm right by your side through it and I'm not gonna go anywhere." She wiped the sweat that was starting to run down your forehead. "He's gonna be okay and so will you."
She kissed your forehead and let you squeeze her hand as another pain came over you.
And just as she promised, she was by your side through the entire grueling process. You both only breathed a sigh of relief when you heard your little boy's cry for the very first time.
"See? He's alright." She pecked your forehead and whispered in your ear how proud she was of you and how much she loved you both.
The process had left you both physically and emotionally exhausted. But you refused to sleep until you got to see your son. So, just a day after it all began Taylor was wheeling you down to the area your little boy was in.
You almost broke down again when you laid your eyes on him. "He's so small..." you cried, feeling Taylor wrap her arms around your shoulder as you stared at the little angel you both have been waiting so long for.
"Can I touch him?" You asked the nurse, needing her reassurance before you even tried. He was so small, so fragile, and you were almost scared that he'd fall apart in your hands. But he didn't. As soon as his head was over your heart he let out a whimper.
"He recognizes you." Taylor smiled through her tears. She's been overwhelmed by the events that the last day has held but she's kept it together for you. And looking at you holding your little boy, who somehow had made it through and was gonna be okay given some time, she felt heart swell with the most love she's ever felt in her life.
"He's perfect." She whispered as she brushed her thumb across his cheek. He didn't have much hair but the few strands were blonde, like hers. "I love him so much already." She sobbed. Her emotions were getting the best of her but she didn't care. All she cared about at that moment was you and your little boy.
"Our little fighter..." she paused, reaching down to touch his tiny hand when it hit her. "I know what we should name him. Ethan. It means firm and strong. Reminds me of him."
You had gone back and forth with names for the longest time before you both gave up and decided you'd just wait and see what he'd look like. And looking at him now, while also knowing the meaning of the name Ethan, it fits him perfectly.
"I think that's perfect." You leaned your head against Taylor's shoulder and sighed. "He's gonna be okay. He's tough like you are."
You leaned down to press a soft kiss to his forehead. "No. Like we are." You watched him breathe, neither of you really saying a word as you just stared at the little boy that's already stolen both of your hearts.
He was gonna be okay. He had to be.
