You sat in your car for a few minutes before you got out. You didn't see Taylor's car anywhere so you figured she was running late. But to your surprise she was sitting at a table, patiently waiting for you to arrive.
She looked up when she heard footsteps approaching her and when she saw that it was you she quickly got up and walked to your chair to pull it out for you. "Thank you" you smiled and she sat back down, fearing if she stood any longer her legs would give out on her.
She's nervous. She can tell you are too. But more than that, she's hopeful. But she knew she had to take it slow instead of springing it all on you so suddenly. "You want anything?" You nodded. "Your usual?" She stood up and grabbed her wallet at the same time you grabbed yours. "Uh, yeah. You still remember it?" You grabbed some money from your wallet but she pushed it away. "I've got it, and yes, I still remember. You always ordered the same thing every time we came in. how could I forget it?" She teased and went up to order your drink for you.
She came back a moment later and put your drink down on the table in front of you. "Thanks." You smiled and took a few sips. "It's no problem." She took a deep breath and let a comfortable silence linger around you both. "How have you been lately?" She asked. "I've been good. yeah, things have been busy but I've been good." She nodded. "That's good to hear."
You made small talk for a few minutes before you both went quiet again. "I don't know if I should bring this up but... I just need you to know that I'm sorry." When she looked at you and saw that you weren't uncomfortable with this particular topic, she continued. "Do you ever think about it? About what things would be like if we were still together?"
You sighed heavily and almost sadly. Taylor picked up on it right away, still having that intuition about how you felt. "Yeah. I do. A lot, honestly." She nodded her head. "Me too." "Sometimes I wonder if we'd be a family now. We used to think about that a lot. Or I wonder if we would've gotten more cats" she chuckled and bit the inside of her cheek. "Or where we'd be living, what kinda place we'd have. Like if it'd have a big backyard or a place for us to sit outside at night and listen to the sound of the crickets chirp... like we used to do."
You ran a hand over your face as Taylor bit her lip to hold back her tears. "I miss you" she blurted out, unable to hold it back any longer. "Taylor-" she shook her head and sighed. "I should've told you this long before the divorce was final. Before you left. But I didn't so I'm gonna tell you this right now. I love you. I always have and I always will. I should've fought harder for you, for us. I should've apologized for picking fights some nights. I should've told you that I don't ever wanna spend a day without you because it just feels wasted. I hate that I don't get to wake up every morning without there. I should be used to it by now but I'm not and I don't think I ever will be. I miss you y/n, I miss you so much it hurts. I know you might not feel the same and that's okay, I'd understand. But I need you to know that I'm sorry for not fighting harder for us and for not showing you every day just how much I love you and how much you mean to me."
You didn't even realize it but you had tears streaming down your cheeks. "I've wanted to hear that from you for so long." You said making a tear fall from Taylor's eyes. "I'm sorry it took me so long to say it." You didn't know what came over you but you got up from your chair and went over to hers instead. You sat down on her lap and let her hold you close for the first time in what felt like forever. "I've missed you. I'm sorry too." Taylor shook her head again and slowly wrapped her arms around you. "No, you don't need to apologize. We can put this all behind us if you wanna."
You turned your head and stared into her eyes. they were glistening with tears. You moved a strand of her hair behind her ear and leaned in to kiss her. It was quick and soft but it was enough for Taylor. "Marry me again," she said and you giggled. "You sure? You don't wanna take it slow?" you asked hesitantly, figuring that's what she'd want. "No. I lost you for eight months, I don't wanna waste any more time. We don't have to do it today but just... please." you nodded and Taylor pulled you in for another kiss, this one much longer and much more passionate than the last. "I love you. I'm never gonna go another day without telling you that. Without worshipping every part of you. You're beautiful and I love you." You grinned, another tear falling down your cheek as you realized that everything was slowly starting to fall right back into place.
"I love you too." You buried your face in her neck and sat there with her for a moment before she took your hand and stood up. You both grabbed your things and your drinks before she led you out to your car. "Take me home." You mumbled and Taylor felt her heart sink. "What?" "Wherever you live now... take me there." She let out a breath of relief. "You make it all feel like home, Taylor. I just wanna be with you again."
She leaned over and kissed your cheek. "I won't let you go now. Never again. I promise." She climbed in the driver's seat to drive you home. To a home that you'd share together. Finally.
