Captain Santiago stared blankly at Major Hawthorne; he could not comprehend what was going on. Indeed, after he went to his superior's office, he could not remember a single thing.
"Then, a few hours later, you and six of your soldiers were found in the forest, all knocked down. Captain Santiago, what the hell happened?"
"Honestly, sir, I ... could not remember anything."
Captain Santiago said candidly. He knew that kind of excuse would not fly with the major, however, it was the truth. He could not remember a single thing.
There was a knock at the door and without anyone's permission, the physician came in.
"Good day, gentlemen."
The doctor greeted the men in uniform. "Captain Santiago, it is nice to have you back. How are you feeling?"
"Good, I guess." The captain answered.
"You've been asleep for three days. So, it is perfectly fine if you feel a bit disoriented. For now, you take a rest and will continue to observe you for a few more days."
"Thank you, doctor." The captain said.
"Doctor, can I speak with you outside?" Major Hawthorne commanded.
"Certainly, major."
Outside the captain's hospital room, two soldiers were still in their post as the major and the doctor began to converse.
"Doctor, I need you to release the patient in our custody." Major Santiago said.
"Major Hawthorne, I am sorry, but I cannot do that. The patient maybe unscathed from the outside, except for a few bruises here and there, but from the inside it is a different story. My colleague and I are baffled, how is it possible that the captain is still alive. He should be dead by now."
As they were discussing, a nurse aide went outside the captain's room carrying a medical device that measures vital signs of a patient. The soldiers stopped him.
