Janice was a lot of things. Cold, calculated, cunning, manipulative, some would even say she was cruel. But one thing she was not was a monster. Even her black heart was capable of something like righteousness and humanity. A humanity that perhaps rarely came to the surface, but was there nonetheless. When she was at the Nursery late that evening with Marjorie, she thought it would be an ordinary late shift.
The day had been long and tiring, the last child had just left, and with that also Charlotte. But she worked some more to enjoy the silence in the assistant manager's office. And Marjorie seemed to be doing the same. The office door was open, just like Janice's door.
She could see the manager sitting there at her desk, typing away. There was a strange silence throughout the building. It was strange to be here after hours. The corridors that were usually full of life all day were now quiet.
It was like being in a limbo. Between day and night, you could say. Janice switched off her PC. Her task was done, a quick glance at the clock showed her that it was already half past seven. It was already dark outside, and it had been a mixture of snow and rain all day. She packed her bag and got up.
Marjorie didn't even notice Janice getting up from her desk and slowly leave the building. The black-haired woman walked through the dark corridors and was almost at the entrance. As she reached out her hand for the door handle, when it was suddenly yanked open. Janice was more than surprised to look into the eyes of Roger.
The man's anger was written all over his face. "Good evening Roger, why are you make a visit this late?"
The man snorted and entered the building, letting the door fall into the lock behind him with a jerk. "Is Marjorie still here?" his voice was harsh and aggressive, the faint smell of alcohol in the air.
"In the office," Janice replied calmly, raising her eyebrow a little sceptically. The whole interaction was just strange. Without saying anything else, the man stormed past her. He stomped down the corridor with loud footsteps.
Janice looked after him, now with even more questions lingering in her mind. It was no secret that Marjorie was a thorn in Roger's side. But his resentment towards her seemed to be growing steadily. It could be because Roger had only just realised. That Marjorie was useless in making the Knight name stronger.
Even in all his disappointment with his son, Roger had hoped that marrying someone with the name Van Gould would give him an advantage. But he seemed to have finally realised that Marjorie had nothing to do with this family. But who knows now what had made him so angry.
Janice shook her head slightly. A hint of malicious spread through her. The thought that Roger would now storm into Marjorie's office in a rage and let his anger hit her, gave Janice a slight smile. But as she reached for the door handle again, something else began to stir inside her. A quiet voice in her head. Worry. Janice didn't even know where it had come from. But she was actually worried.
Perhaps the reason was that she had overheard the conversation between Siobhan and Mia a few weeks ago, unwillingly. Janice had always suspected that Roger was a man with a short temper, and she herself had noticed that he sometimes lacked the necessary respect for women. But to hear from Mia and Siobhan what had happened behind closed doors. Gave even her a uneasy feeling.
'Why do you care?' she asked herself as she pulled her hand back and set her bag down next to the entrance, taking another deep breath. 'You'll only regret it later...' and with that she turned on her heel. With every step she took closer to the office, she heard Roger's deep voice.
She couldn't make out exactly what he was saying, only fragments of words reached her. "My son....that idiot!... Deception!... ", was all Janice could make out. But it was difficult because the office door was closed. Marjorie was apparently so quiet that Janice couldn't hear her reply.
