A Day in the Hospital

It was still early in the morning, the sun had only just brightened the sky and the ward at the Knight Hospital was, as usual, in a state of slight chaos. Three nurses, Vivian, Charlotte and Carly, were standing in front of the rota, looking intently at it. Charlotte, who always studied the rota the longest, pointed her finger at a new name.

" Look, we've a new one.", she said, pointing to the entry for General Surgery. " Dr. Marjorie Van Gould. She starts today."

Vivian, with her a cup of coffee in hand, sighed. " I hope she's nice. The last newcomers were rather...difficult."

" Yep.", Carly agreed, " And especially with the doctors, you never know how they'll fit in at the clinic. Everyone has their own idiosyncrasies."

" You said it.", Vivian mumbled and rolled her eyes. " I'm just wondering how she'll get on with the Knight siblings. As a surgeon, she will have to consult with the cardiologist and neurologist at some point...... Well I would have been happier about new nurses, but what can you expect from our director Roger Knight."

" Mmh... I agree. But I can't wait to see how she gets on.", said Charlotte, laughing softly. " The cardiologist is so stubborn. And the neurologist... well, she's quite introverted, but scary. "

" That's right.", Carly nodded and shook her head. "And then there's the orthopaedic surgeon. She really is a tough cookie. She won't listen to anything, always thinks she knows everything better. But somehow you have to respect her, she gets her work done quickly and efficiently."

" Oh, and then there is the anaesthetist!", Vivian couldn't help but smile. "She's more in the break room than in the operating theatre. When she's not drinking coffee, she's never where she should be. Sometimes you wonder if she's really an anaesthetist at all or more of a barista. Isn't she Charlotte?"

Charlotte turned slightly red in the face. " Mia... Dr. Roberts does her job well."

Carly giggled softly. " You must know that, Char."

Vivian was just about to add something else when the door opened and Siobhan, the HR clerk, entered with a young woman in a white coat. So that was the new doctor. Dr. Marjorie Van Gould, with short brown hair and a determined look. She shook hands with the nurses in a friendly manner.

" Good morning! I'm Dr. Van Gould.", she said with a smile. " I'm really happy to be here today."

" Good morning.", Charlotte replied politely. "Welcome to the ward. We hope you feel at home here quickly."

" Yes, and if you need anything, we're here to help.", Vivian added and gave Siobhan a look.

" Thank you, that's very kind of you. I hope I get on well with the other doctors.", said Marjorie as she looked around for a moment. " I've heard it can get a bit turbulent here sometimes."

" Oh, you could say that.", Carly said with a mischievous smile. " But don't worry, you'll soon get used to the rhythm here."

Marjorie nodded. " I'm looking forward to the challenge."

Vivian clapped her hands. " Ladies, get to work.", she said, looking at Charlotte and Carly. " Dr Van Gould, you'd best come with me, I'll show you everything."

The operating theatre was filled with the steady hum of equipment and the muffled sound of ventilation. A patient lay on the table while the bright light shone over the trauma surgeons and her team.

Dr. Sorscha Doyle, the orthopaedic surgeon, was fully focused on the procedure. Her hands moved with precision as she fixed the piece of bone with the forceps. She was known for her expertise and precision, but also for her stern demeanour and seemingly indomitable will.
