It was the night when Charlotte left her house in a hurry. She had to leave. It had happened. Her and Mia had they first real argument, and it was about something completely trivial. She got into her car and gave herself over to the road. Without steering it herself, her journey took her to a familiar place that held so many memories.
As Charlotte drove into the car park of the abandoned building, she was overcome with nostalgia. It was sad to see the place like this now. Boarded up and locked. The sign above the entrance that used to proudly display the Knight Nursery sign was no longer there.
But what surprised Charlotte even more was that there was a other car parked there, and she knew who else she was about to meet. The brunette walked round the building, at the back was the fire escape that led up to the roof.
The roof of the abandoned building was silent, only the occasional rustle of the wind could be heard. But the view of the city, bathed in the pale light of the street lamps, was still the same. Charlotte approached the figure sitting on the canopy and gazed into the distance.
" I thought I wouldn't find anyone here.", Charlotte spoke softly as she sat down next to the person.
Sorscha looked up in surprise, she had her head rested on her knees. " Charlie! Don't sneak up on me like that!"
Charlotte grinned slightly and the two women exchanged a glance. When the Nursery still existed, they used to come up here sometimes in the summer and enjoy their breaks. But now they were sitting here on a cold January night. " Why are you here?", she asked cautiously.
Sorscha sighed. " Clodagh has received an invitation to her older sister's wedding." Charlotte raised her eyebrows in surprise. "Oh, she's finally getting married. Who is it now?"
" The football player with the fake American accent.... But it doesn't matter... it's more the fact that only Clodagh got an invitation..." Sorscha sighed again. " I shouldn't care, Clodagh's family has never liked me... but that they're going this far."
" What does Clodagh say?", Charlotte asked cautiously.
"She hasn't spoken to her parents since the pregnancy... She's never had a good relationship with her sister either... she will not go... But it has reopened old wounds... It set her back and now she's doubting everything again..." Sorscha gazed fixedly into the darkness. ".. She's been sleeping in the guest room for two days.... Clo self-hatred and internalised homophobia is gnawing at her again... I don't know how to deal with it right now."
Charlotte listened to her carefully. She couldn't imagine what it was like to have your family hate you for something you were born with. " Our mind can sometimes be our worst enemy..... I think Clodagh is also grieving a for the family she never had..."
Sorscha nodded. " My parents took Clo in like a second daughter... but they're my parents... I see it so often when my siblings talk about our childhood that it hurts Clo... because hers was so painful.... I want to give her the distance she needs... but this distance is killing me..."
" Does Clodagh know that?"
" No...", Sorscha murmured. " I don't want to burden her with this..." Charlotte put her hand on the irish arm. " You should talk to her.", Sorscha breathed loudly. " You're right... but enough about that. Why are you here?"
Charlotte shifted back and forth a little nervously. She didn't really want to talk about it. It was so stupid. A stupid argument. " Mia and I had a fight..." Sorscha looked at her in surprise. ".. It was such a stupid argument... I told her about my day and how this one mum expected so much from me. Then Mia said I should finally stand up for myself more, and I said I didn't want a confrontation..." Charlotte played with the chain around her neck. " I don't remember how it got so heated, but suddenly we were in a real argument. I said to her that I didn't want everyone to hate me like, they did her..."
Sorscha frowned. She and Mia weren't really familiar with each other. She could count on one hand how many times she had spoken to the redhead. " I mean, Charlie, you're not entirely wrong."
" Sorscha! Mia was made that way by Roger. It's all just a show. A mask she wears so that nobody gets too close to her. I shouldn't have said that." Charlotte had raised her voice slightly, something that rarely happened.
" Sorry Charlie... I didn't know that. You should talk to her... I mean Mia's right about one thing, don't put up with everything."
" I just don't want any conflict.", muttered Charlotte. Sorscha nudged her arm lightly. " You don't have to, the next time a parent causes you a problem, get me or Winter, and if all else fails, get Autumn. But don't put up with everything Charlie."
Charlotte nodded. "You're right. Thank you Sorscha."
The two of them sat on the roof for quite a while. They talked about various topics or told each other stories from the old days before the merger. Only when it was after twelve o'clock did they finally decide to go home.
Sorscha quietly entered the house. It was quiet and dark. She slowly climbed the stairs. First she made her way to Quinn's nursery, the small girl was sleeping peacefully. Then she looked into the shared bedroom, but like the last few days, the bed was empty. Sorscha sighed softly.
Now she sat on the bed in her pyjamas and stared at the wall. Should she wait until tomorrow? No, she no longer wanted to. She quietly entered the guest room. Clodagh's back was turned to her. Carefully, Sorscha sat down on the edge of the bed and ran her hand over her wife's back. Sorscha immediately felt her wife's body react.
A quiet sob came from Clodagh, as she turned around. "I'm sorry Sorscha... I shouldn't have pushed you away..." Sorscha came closer to her and took her in her arms. " Hey... it's all right... You'll never be able to push me away... I'm by your side no matter what."
Charlotte sat in her car for a few more minutes before she plucked up the courage to approach her house. She could see that the light was still on in the living room, Mia must still be awake. She had barely opened the door to the house when she heard footsteps.
" Sweetheart." Mia's voice was quiet. Charlotte only carefully dared to lift her gaze to look into her girlfriend's eyes. " Mia, I'm sorry... I shouldn't have said that." She could feel the tears welling up in her eyes. Mia quickly reached her and hugged her. " We both shouldn't have thrown things like that at each other. I'm sorry too."
The two of them just stood there for a while. Until Charlotte finally mumbled into Mia's chest. "Luckily our first fight wasn't over an ex-partner," she immediately felt Mia laugh. "Like Marjoreece? Yes, luckily! I don't want us to be like that couple!"
