The night was dark and silent as Vivian approached the entrance to Roger's villa with quick, quiet steps. The streetlights cast faint shadows on the ground, and she could hear the soft rustle of the wind moving the trees near the mansion. Between those trees, Autumn's car packed up. Which Vivian just had a good view of.
The nurse's heart was pounding, but she remained calm. She knew there was no time to lose. She only had one chance and she had to take it.
"Are you sure you know where the safe is?" whispered Vivian, who had headphones in her ear. Her phone in her pocket. There was a rustle on the other end of the line just before Autumn's voice rose. Slightly tense, but also determined. "Yes, I remember. The room with the shelves behind the fireplace. The safe is hidden in the wall, right under a painting," she replied quietly.
Vivian hummed in response as she carefully walked around the building. She moved in the blind spot of the cameras. The villa was made of old stone, which was arched around. This gave Vivian enough to climb up the wall. When she reached the window on the first floor, she quietly tried to lift it. Fortunately, it wasn't locked.
"Hurry," Autumn said, her worried words ringing in Vivian's ear. "I can help you every step of the way, but you have to be quick. My father could come back at any time."
Vivian nodded to herself, even if Autumn couldn't see it. She slipped into the dark, luxuriously furnished room and quietly closed the door behind her. Her eyes quickly became accustomed to the darkness. Everything was as she remembered it from the ball, only bigger, more opulent and even more frightening in the stillness of the night. The room looked like a mausoleum that told of the secrets of its inhabitants.
"Come on, you can do this," she murmured to herself and moved carefully towards the fireplace.
Her footsteps were almost inaudible on the expensive carpet, and every time she passed a window, she held her breath to make sure no one saw her. There was always the risk that someone might come in at any moment.
"I can see the carmine," she whispered into the phone and took a deep breath. "Let's hope that the documents really are there..."
"They will be," Autumn reassured her.
As Vivian stood in front of the fireplace, she immediately began to examine the painting. Autumn quietly guided her as the mechanisms opened the safe. A tiny lever that was almost invisible, and then the combination. Her fingers trembled, but she forced herself to remain calm.
"Okay... I'm in..." she whispered as she found the lever and pressed it. A soft click sounded and the hidden safe slowly opened. Her heart beat faster. She reached in and pulled out a folder labelled 'Heritage - Properties'.
"I've got it, Autumn," she said, her breathing quickening as she tucked the folder into her bag.
"Great. Now get out quickly before it's too late," Autumn replied.
Vivian nodded resolutely and slipped back into the corridor. But at that moment, she heard a noise that made the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. Footsteps. The door opened. Vivian froze. Had Roger heard her? Was he already back?
"Damn it!" she whispered in panic and pressed herself flat against the wall. Her heart raced as she tried to duck into the shadows. It was too late to hide. She had to act. Quickly.
Suddenly she heard a female voice coming from the corridor. "Mr Knight, are you back?"
"It's the housekeeper..." Autumn whispered softly.
Vivian breathed a sigh of relief when she realised that it was only one of the employees closing the door to one of the adjoining rooms. She was lucky. She just had to go out through the door now and sneak along the garden where the high gate led into the woods.
