Mitch shivers. He's out in the cold, in only a tee shirt and boxers, and only has a very thin blanket to keep him warm. He's trying to make his way home.
His body trembles as he makes his way to the bus stop, sitting on the bench there, and waiting on the next bus to Carrollton. All he can hope is that he has enough money.
~
Beau sobs into his hands. Today's the one year anniversary of Mitch's kidnapping. The realization that Mitch probably won't be found has hit him today, and it's really hard to take.
~
Mitch meekly offers a $10 bill to the bus driver. The bus driver shakes his head. "You need a special card," he says, "I'm sorry, I can't let you on."
"P-please—", Mitch begs, "I was able to escape my k-kidnapper's house but I won't make it h-home if I have to w-walk. It's f-freezing, sir."
The bus driver looks into Mitch's eyes and sees nothing but truth.
"Alright," he says, "hop on. Where are you headed?"
"Ca-Carrollton." Mitch says.
"Alright, that's normally off of my route but you've got yourself in quite the situation here. Since you're the only one on the bus, I'll take you there."
"Th-thank you, sir." He offers the $10 bill.
"This is free of charge. You need to get home," the bus driver says, "We'll be there in about 45 minutes."
~
Beau looks at their engagement pictures. Tears still roll down his face as he realizes he never got to marry the love of his life, and possibly never will.
~
Mitch had fallen asleep for the bus ride, and was terrified when being shaken awake by the bus driver.
"Hey, hey, it's ok. We're in Carrollton." He says, and Mitch's face softens with realization.
"Thank you," Mitch says to the bus driver before he leaves.
Luckily he knew how to get home from here. It would only be about a 10 minute walk.
~
Beau tries to make himself look decent when he hears a knock at the door. He doesn't believe his eyes when he opens it.
"This can't be true," Beau says to himself. He shuts the door and opens it again to see a shivering Mitch.
"Mitchy? Is that you?"
Mitch shakily nods, tears brimming in his eyes.
"Come in, sweetheart," Beau chokes on his words, closing the door behind Mitch. The first thing he does once the door is closed is embrace Mitch. He needs to touch him, feel him to know that this is real.
Mitch slowly stops shivering, but is still shaking because of his crying. When they pull apart from the hug he realizes Beau looks the same.
Beau draws Mitch a bath, joining him and washing his hair and his body for him. He frowns when he sees how unhealthily skinny he's gotten, but that will take time to fix. When the bath is done, he brings Mitch a pair of his PJ's and Mitch shakes his head at them.
"I want to wear yours," Mitch says.
Beau smiles. Mitch still knows what he wants. He goes and gets one of his own tee shirts and sweatpants and Mitch smiles when he comes back into the bathroom.
It's the first time Beau's seen Mitch's smile in a year.
Once Mitch is dried off, moisturized, and dressed, Beau carries him to their bedroom. He tucks them both under the covers before speaking.
"Mitchy, baby, what happened?"
Mitch shakes his head and buries himself deeper into Beau.
Beau runs a soothing hand on Mitch's back, letting him know that it's okay.
"How did you get back here?"
Mitch sighs. "Escaped," he mumbles, "A nice bus driver gave me a ride here for free."
Beau smiles. He'll have to find him and thank him later.
"I'm never letting you out of my sight again, okay?" Beau says.
He feels a small kiss being placed on his chest and that's all the feedback he needs before they both fall asleep.
