You felt around. A brick wall, and to the left... cool metal covered in rectangular ridges. It must be that suit of armour outside the metalworks shop. So she must be just a bit further ahead.
You stepped forward, walking carefully with a hand slightly outstretched. Then, something warm seemed to interlock with it.
"... Margaret?"
You could hear a smile in her voice. "Oh, you caught me. How did you know?"
"I don't know anyone else who'd be here so late." You replied, feeling yourself smile as well.
You weren't sure when, but you started having late night meetings with Margaret. Some drunkards decided to target you once night, leaving you laying on the street with injuries you couldn't see, only feel.
Since Inaba was always quiet, more so at night, you knew nobody would turn up to help you. You'd probably have to stay there till morning, and you even if you could walk, you lost your bearings too much to go back home.
That's what you thought, but a woman showed up. You didn't even hear her footsteps.
*
"Are you alright?" She asked.
This is what you hated, feeling so helpless. "Well, no."
"Forgive me for not seeing the obvious." She said. She didn't sound like she was from Inaba. "Here, allow me to help."
You heard shuffling, and it seemed she knelt down next to you.
"I'm going to touch your leg now."
When you nodded, she began to treat you. Her once cold hands seemed to warm up, and you felt a fabric go over your injury.
"I've bandaged it. May I see your face now?" Her voice was so calm and serene. Not only did your leg feel better, but your mood did too.
She put her hands near your forehead, and you winced slightly. But eventually, that felt better too.
Finally she helped you stand, and you moved your limbs with surprise.
"It doesn't hurt anymore. Are you a doctor or something?"
She chuckled warmly. "No, it's only... first aid."
You heard the tap of her heels, as if she was walking away. Before you realised it yourself, you spoke out.
"Wait, what's your name?"
She paused, then replied. "My name is Margaret."
"Margaret..." You repeated. She definitely wasn't from around here then. You wanted to know more, but you couldn't pinpoint why you were so interested. "Um... How should I repay you? I don't want it to be a charity."
"I don't see an issue with that..." She said, "But alright. If we could meet here to talk now and then, I'd be happy with that."
"To... talk?"
A small laugh left her, and the sound was pleasant to your ears.
"Yes, to talk. Until we meet again, if we do."
*
"What is it? Are you reminiscing?" Margaret asked, breaking you out of your thoughts.
She was a mysterious woman, always seeming so calm and collected. But as you talked more, she revealed a more playful side. You wish she'd tell you more.
'I was." You admitted. "We've been talking a long time, but there's so much I still don't know."
"Hm? What do you wish to know?"
"What's your last name?" You asked simply to start.
She chuckled in that classic way of hers. "I wonder. Would you mind if I borrowed yours?"
You were half-frustrated she slyly avoided it, and half-flustered. "Jeez... you have an answer for everything."
She didn't reply right away, and you wondered why. Then she spoke up.
"Any other questions then?"
"Where are you from?"
"Hmm. You could say I'm always moving around?"
"Oh." That one actually made some sense. But it was an answer you didn't want to hear. "...Will you still be near Inaba?"
Margaret smiled although you couldn't see it. "I should be, for as long as I need to."
You fell silent, thinking. "What about if you want to stay?"
"What I want...?" Margaret paused. "I'm afraid I've never thought about that."
"... I see." Sadly, you turned away. This is probably you'll get and will get from her. Maybe she wasn't as serious for you as you were for her.
You only got two steps away when you were stopped, Margaret holding your hand within both of hers.
"I'm sorry." She apologised. "I've grown used to doing things by need- to what's expected of me. But this is a first, and... I'm not sure what to do."
"What's a first?"
Without a word she lifted your hand, and soon you felt the soft skin of her cheek. It felt warm under your palm.
"I know this, I wish to keep speaking with you. For as long as I'm able- no, for longer than that..." She let go of your hand, and it felt by your side.
"But it's not something I can promise. I'm truly sorry."
You wished you could see her expression. She sounded different from the Margaret you usually knew, the one who was always one step ahead and enjoyed teasing you.
"Then," You started, still in the midst of wording your thoughts. You gingerly reached for her hand. "Let me promise it. I'll always be here, ready for you."
"I can't ask you to do that..."
"Then good things it's me saying it, huh?" You asked, smiling.
The air around you finally felt lighter, and you heard her laugh again. It sounded sweeter this time, belonging to a Margaret you only got a glimpse of. She found your hand and grasped it.
"You're an odd one... But I suppose the same can go for me." Margaret replied. 'I look forward to it, my patient Prince."
