Since your last hangout, Akira and you had been spending more time together. You could talk to him with ease, and he was always one to listen attentively. It was a breath of fresh air, since you were so used to being met with impatience and confusion when you tried to communicate. With Akira, those problems never resurfaced.
That was especially true since he had been slowly but surely learning sign language. He seemed uncertain at times, but even when his sentence was slightly jumbled, it made you smile. And seeing that, he couldn't help doing so as well.
It became a daily occurrence for the two of you to sit at lunch by the open hall connecting the left and right side of the building. When you weren't talking about books, you'd be teaching him sign language.
You had been teaching him easy and helpful phrases for now. Akira looked at his hand in concentration, and slowly moved them. "Can... I have... directions?"
Happy for him, you grinned and clapped, signing "good!".
He smiled at that, eyes softening. He signed "thanks" and pointed to you.
Shaking your head, you pointed back to him. He was the one putting the effort in!
The two of you sat for a moment, pointing at one another in silence. It was broke when his eyes crinkled and he chuckled, a small giggle leaving you as well. You were so caught up in the sillyness of it all that you didn't realise Akira had stopped, and was now staring at you in wonder.
When you noticed, your hand shot up to your mouth in a panic, and you looked down at your shoes. You forgot that you'd make a noise when you laughed, since you were so used to staying silent. And it wasn't often you laughed with somebody else. You were sure you sounded so strange and odd.
Seeing your worried expression, Akira leaned forward and tapped your shoulder. When you looked, he smiled reassuringly.
"Cute." He signed.
Immediately your face felt warm and your mind blanked. After a while of staring at him in shock, you shakily signed a thanks to him. You certainly weren't expecting him to compliment you, but even more than that you weren't expecting him to pat your head next!
As you turned to look at him he paused, as he usually did when he was going to speak to you. He had been practicing this question for a while, since he wanted to get it right.
"I'd like to... Introduce you to my friends." He told you, movements ceasing for a moment before continuing. "Do you want to?"
"Is that okay?" You asked back, unsure. Besides Akira now, you didn't talk to many people.
He nodded confidently, and you hesitated in reply. Noticing this, his gaze flickered to your hand before deciding to put it under his. The action was comforting despite the affect it had on your already thumping heart.
You were nervous, but if they were friends with Akira, they must be nice. You were quite curious on what kind of people they were. So, you nodded back at him.
With it now decided, the two of you stood, Akira leading you to where his friends where. You were thinking of how you'd introduce yourself when you realised halfway through the walk that he was still holding your hand. In your surprise your footsteps had ceased entirely, leading Akira to stop as well.
His mouth moved in an "oh" motion, and what followed was a mouthed apology to your ears. You waved a dismissive hand to show there was no harm done, and your walk continued.
You wanted to say that you didn't mind it, quite the contrary, but like all other times you couldn't get the words out.
Soon enough the two of you made it upstairs to the roof, which was territory unknown to you. The door swung upon, and before it revealed two teenagers chatting by long abandoned classroom chair and tables.
