For a while now, you weren't sure how to feel. You had developed a crush on the quiet transfer student Yu, and after getting to know him and becoming a good friend of his, you somehow gathered the courage to confess. You didn't want to keep your feelings a secret and then regret it later, so you did it... And he felt the same way!
It was the best possible conclusion, you two were now dating and in the moment you were filled with overwhelming happiness. However as the months went on you realised that nothing had really changed, although you couldn't say it was a bad situation either, since you both still talked regularly and you spent time together as normal... But it was as if you hadn't confessed at all!
Class had just ended but the bell fell on deaf ears as you absentmindedly stared at Yu. You were so lost in your thoughts that you had noticed he turned his head to look back at you.
"What is it?" He asked, voice holding that same mellow and even tone. It was always so calming for you... Except for right now.
You jumped and laughed awkwardly, attempting to appear normal. "Nothing, it's nothing!"
He eyed you with searching grey eyes, but didn't ask any further. "Okay. Oh,"
Outstretching his hand, he reached for your face. You closed your eyes in anticipation, a fluttery nervousness making itself present in your stomach. You soon felt his hand brushing the top of your head, and after feeling him move away you opened your eyes.
He held up a leaf. "This was in your hair."
"A-Ah... Right." You muttered in defeat. Curse the open window next to you getting your hopes up! "Thank you."
"No problem. You looked kind of cute there."
You were still in the midst of getting over your disappointment when his words sunk in, prompting you to gawk at him, face flushed. "Um... Th-Thanks."
Yu then stood up from his seat, his bag in one hand. "Shall we go?
Even while you were just friends Yu would walk you home and it was something you always looked forward to. Recently though your head was a mess, still wondering if anything had changed.
The two of you were passing the river when you glanced down at his hand swaying by his side. Your own jolted a bit and you blushed.
'Holding hands is a couple thing, isn't it?' Your gaze flickered between the moving pavement and his hand, and you bit your lip. Slowly you inched your hand closer to his, the fluttering from before now an anxious churning.
Just as your fingers were millimetres from his own, Yu put his hand in his pocket.
You froze, almost halting your walking completely. Did he notice? If he did, then that mean he didn't want to hold hands with you, right?!
Face now burning with embarrassment, you kept your eyes straight ahead. As usual, Yu was characteristically silent, unlike the active thoughts now running in your mind.
Eventually you reached your home, and despite your desire to go hide your face in a pillow immediately, you turned to Yu. "Well, see you tomorrow."
He nodded. "Yeah. Sleep well tonight."
With those gentle words, your mood couldn't help but be lifted. A genuine smile rose on your lips as you replied. "I will, but you should too, okay?"
Not hearing an answer, you opened your eyes, surprised to see Yu with a thoughtful expression. "Yu?"
He blinked, eyes no longer dazed. "Oh, yeah. I will." Before you could question him further, he smiled back at you and waved his hand. "See you tomorrow."
