"Minato-kun!" You called, making your way to his desk after class like always.
He stayed seated, lifting his headphones and giving you the same blank look as you borrowed the chair nearby. "What?"
You sat down, beaming. "You look a little bored, guess that's nothing new though!"
"I'm not bored." He answered
"So anyway, what are you listening to?" You asked.
"Music."
His flat answer didn't deter you, and you laughed in reply. "I had that coming!"
Conversations usually went like this between you. Well, you were the one doing most of the conversing. You'd ask him of his favourite things, what he was up to, and only receive apathetic and, at best, vague answers. But that didn't put you off! Minato interested you a lot, and you wanted to get to know him more. (And you thought he was kinda cool, too...)
"Oh, yeah." You said suddenly, as if just remembering. "Want to go somewhere with me later?"
Minato looked at you silently. Nothing about his expression gave you any hints as to what his answer would be!
"Like, to eat, or something!" You added, speaking quickly. "Gotta keep our energy up, especially for exams! Hahah, ha..."
Your confidence was waning. Talking to him was easy, it was part of your routine now. But this was the first time you've ever asked him out.
"... Where?"
Surprised at his response, happiness bubbled up within you. "Oh, um! I didn't think you'd agree, so I hadn't thought about it, ahaha!"
With a nervous laugh you scratched your cheek. Your thoughts usually ran 20 miles an hour, but even with that you couldn't think of where to go. As you pondered on it, you missed a ghost of a smile on Minato's lips.
"Well, we can decide when we get there." Minato said finally, appearing aloof as he stretched his neck to the side. This didn't discourage you, and you beamed.
"Okay, yeah! Let's do that!"
And so, after school ended, he kept his promise. The two of you made your way to Iwatodai's strip mall. The entire way you couldn't control the skip in your step, and Minato lagged behind somewhat in his lethargy. And as usual, you chatted the entire time. About anything and everything that came to mind, and Minato would usually respond with a 'hm'.
You didn't mind that too much though, you knew he was a quiet guy!
While walking, a building caught your eye. "Ooh, the manga café! Want to check it out?"
Minato followed your pointed finger, and gave a simple nod. You beamed, even further filled with excited energy.
Inside the café was cool, thanks to the air conditioning. You stretched happily at the change in temperature.
"So nice! Have you ever been here before, Minato-kun?"
"No, I haven't."
"Then we're both first-timers! Read manga usually then?"
"No, not particularly."
"I'll tell you some good series!"
Without any hesitation, you went to the counter and urged Minato to follow. Soon you had some lights snacks prepared and some cool drinks to fight off the heat.
All along the store walls was rows among rows of shelved manga, and your eyes were alight.
"Ooh, this one was so good! The fights are amazing. They don't explain the rules of the abilities too much, but if you suspend your belief it's really awesome!" You explained happily. "Should be easy, since magic powers like that aren't real. Too bad though!"
