One might think it would be frightening to be trapped in a world of constant darkness, but being such a part of your life you simply became used to it. Life was experienced with mostly sense of touch and smell, and you had grown to recognise the familiar ones. The rough wood of the school's desk, or the scent of cooked food emitting from the cafeteria - you could identify them easily.
Such things were almost trivial to you now. But one thing you wished you could experience was a person's expression. To know how their lips turn up in a smile or how eyes would soften, or they were all unknown to you. You could feel the muscles in your face move if you grinned or furrowed your eyebrows deeply, but it wasn't the same.
It was an impossible dream though, and one you had been trying to forget about. In it's place you tried to focus on people's voices, their tones and pitches. But it wasn't quite the same.
You heard the tap of a pencil beside you, and a voice. "Something wrong?"
It was rare to hear, but you knew it to be your friend Akira's voice. It was comforting to hear, and you were appreciative that he gave a signal first to let you know he was there.
"No, I'm fine." You answered without much thought.
"Even though you're on your third sigh?" He questioned, and you paused.
Had you been sighing that much? You must've been too lost in thought to realise. Seeing you hesitance, Akira spoke again.
"It's just us here." He told you. "So nobody else will hear what you're worrying about."
You smiled a little at his consideration. "I'm not worrying, more like wondering."
Unseen by you, he tipped his head to one side. "About?"
"Uh," you fiddled with your blazer sleeves before blurting out, "What do people look like when they smile?"
"Huh?"
"Or- or when they're sad, or annoyed. I can tell from people's voices how their feeling, but..." Your voice grew quiet. "I want to know."
Akira was silent for a moment. "What brought this on?"
"It's something I've always thought abut. I know it's probably silly." You muttered, feeling stupid now. Perhaps it was better to keep it to yourself.
"No, I understand." And by his tone you could tell he meant that. "Well, why not tell for yourself?"
Humming questionably, you replied. "But, I can't...?"
"Give me your hands for a second." He responded coolly.
Nervously, you complied, unsure what to expect. Akira's warm hands enveloped yours for a few moments, and they were then placed on soft skin. His own hands retreated and you were left cupping what felt like a face.
You were startled at the sudden intimacy of this position. "Is this okay?"
"Of course." Was all he said, but it didn't stop the quickening pace of your heart.
"Alright..." You said, and slowly you touched his face. It was quite fascinating and soon your interest overtook your embarrassment. His skin was soft, and seemed warm under your touch.
Your hands travelled up to the sides of his face and your fingers bumped against the stem of his glasses. He chuckled at your squeaked apology, saying it was fine. You continued and moved back to where you started, your thumbs millimetres from the corner of his lips. You could feel that the corners up had turned up, and you mirrored the action.
"You're smiling..." Even you weren't sure if it was a statement or a question.
He answered anyway. "I am."
