"These cupcakes are so good!" Ann stated gleefully. "I wasn't expecting any of this either!"
You chuckled in response, hoping your nervousness wasn't showing. Before this you studied the weather patterns, cleared your schedule, and planned everything perfectly. Work kept you both busy, but you always made sure to spend time together.
Usually you could relax in your time with your girlfriend but recently you've been given the opposite effect. For a while you had been thinking over it, but now you were sure- you wanted to marry her.
Ann finished her cupcake and beamed. "When did you think of having a picnic? You sure kept that under wraps!"
"I... Just... Thought it'd be fun!" You smiled, albeit strained. "Nothing wrong with having an excuse to eat food, right?"
"Course not!" Ann agreed with a laugh. "I'm just surprised. Definitely not complaining though."
You hid your sigh of relief. She didn't expect anything, that was good. Still, you couldn't help but be overly aware of the box resting in your pocket.
The weather was neither too warm nor too cold, and the tree the two of you say under provided perfect shade. Streaks of sunlight made its way through the spaces between the leaves, highlighting Ann's blonde locks.
Feeling a stare on her, she looked up to meet her eyes. She giggled. "What's up?"
"Oh, nothing..." You said, before catching yourself. "Well, actually... I wanted to say something."
"Hmm? Okay, go ahead." Ann encouraged, tilting her head quizzically.
This was it, you had to ask! You put your hand in your pocket, your fingers curling around the small box.
"I just wanted to say that, o-or more like ask-"
Unexpected and unplanned, a football landed in the picnic basket. You both jumped at the sudden appearance of it. What soon followed was the loud shouting of kids growing louder.
"Sorry mister!" One apologised, the other picking up the football.
"We kicked it super far, that was so cool!"
"It's fine, no harm done." Ann smiled, speaking to the first one. "Nice kick!"
Their faces both lit up, and they exchanged looks. "Thanks, miss!"
Somehow even faster than they arrived, the ran off back to the main area of the park. Ann laughed.
"Well that was a surprise!" She dusted off her skirt. "Maybe we should get back home, we can't leave Toffee alone too long!"
As she stood, a look of realisation came over her face. "Wait, you were going to ask me something, weren't you?"
You met her eyes, inhaling deeply. "... That's what I was going to say anyway. You read my mind."
"Ah, okay!" She grinned. "Let's pick up some cat treats while we're out!"
You nodded, folding the blanket and placing it in the basket. Perhaps this wasn't the right time, but there'd be plenty more chances.

Although your first try was a blunder, your motivation hadn't wavered. For the second, you brought her to the bridge overlooking the lake. She had been here for modelling jobs before, but it thankfully wasn't so busy this time.
In fact, the area was quite tranquil, but it didn't aid in calming your thudding heartbeat. When Ann leaned her head against your shoulder, you couldn't help but jump.
