My name is Aigis. Unlike humans, I have no last name. There isn't many similarities between humans and I, other than my face resembles one. For as long as my database remembers, I have been nothing other than an anti-shadow weapon.

That fact had never bothered me, it was simply my reason for being, and I had never questioned it. However, when seeing how humans act in their everyday lives, I couldn't help but think in a tone similar to what one would call envy. I had never desired to be human, and yet...

My unusually gloomy thoughts are halted as I see a young child outside. According to my internal clock, it is midnight. During this time, it is normal for a child to be sleeping. With the current weather also taken into account, the temperatures are also too cold to be outside at this time.

"Excuse me." I find myself saying. The young boy looks up at me questionably.

"Why aren't you at home? It is dangerous during this time." I inform. The boy looks down sadly at his lap.

"I don't have a home." He says, clasping his hands. His words make me think.

"You have no home?" I echo, and despite his sad eyes, he smiles at me.

"No, my parents died a while ago. No one else could take care of me, so I'm here." He explains. I tilt my head quizzically.

"There is no one to care for you?"

The boy pouts slightly, shaking his head. "No, everyone ignores me. It's mean."

I nod in understanding. "Yes, that is mean."

The young child's face suddenly lights up, turning to me with a bright grin.

"But, but you talked to me! You're not mean at all!" He happily says, gesturing widely with his hands. Although he is giving me a compliment, I do not feel happy.

"I don't think I am anything." I admit, and the young boy looks sad again.

Tilting his head, he asks me. "Huh? What do you mean?"

I am surprised as he doesn't seem to notice I'm not like him. I gesture to myself, unsure how to explain.

"I can't be 'mean', neither can I be 'nice'. I am nothing, only a robot." I confess, an uncomfortable feeling spreading through me.

Although I told him this, he doesn't look bothered at all. In fact, his face only brightens.

His eyes sparkle when he speaks. "A robot?! That's so cool!"

His response takes me a moment to reply. "... Cool?"

With a frantic nod, he goes in extreme detail on how 'cool' and 'awesome' robots are.

Once he stops speaking, I try to voice my disagreement.

"But, I am not human. I can't be a friend, or family. I'm only a weapon. I can't feel anything like humans can..."

Just as the words left my artificial mouth, the boy clambers on my lap, looking up at me with a friendly expression.

"That's not true! Even though you're a super cool robot, you can be all those things!" He assures. I stay silent, and he continues.

"In fact, you already are! You're my best friend!" He happily tells me.

"Best... Friend?" I reply slowly.

"Yeah, yeah! It means you're the best!"

His words make the gloomy feeling from earlier fade, and what is called a smile forms on my face. To show my gratitude, I do what I've seen many humans do. I'm careful not to crush him with my hard arms. Although it must be uncomfortable and unpleasant, he only laughs happily.
