Standing next to Chie, it only took a quick glance between you both to see the stark contrast in colours. Her clothes were bright vibrant, just like her.

Your clothing on the other hand was very different. For as long as you can remember you've always had an interest in alternative styles, and it was definitely more noticeable as you got into highschool.

The area you lived in was relatively small, so you saw your classmates often even outside school. Due to that they noticed your taste of clothing rather quickly, and were even quicker to say something about it.

You simply ignored it for a while, but it was harder to ignore the heavy feeling in your chest every time your heard those comments. It didn't help that you didn't talk much in class either.

That was why you were surprised when the girl in your class who seemed to be the exact opposite of yourself came to your desk and talked to you. At first you were admittedly standoffish. After all it wasn't often somebody would approach you with good intentions in mind. Despite your coldness though, she didn't waver.

At first the conversations were limited to school work. Then questions like 'what are you eating for lunch?'  Or 'what do you do after school?', the questions varied. Slowly you found that you had opened up slightly, no longer giving curt answers in response. When Chie noticed that, her face seemed to light up.

You noticed it too, and since then you've been unable to stop thinking about it. She seemed genuine in her friendliness, but was the a chance she was going to be just like everyone else? When you thought that, your stomach churned uncomfortably.

Why was it so painful to imagine that her camaraderie was just a facade? Did it really mean so much to you...?

As always the gazebo by Samegawa River was silent, apart from the sound of nearing footsteps. "Oh, Y/n-kun!"

Your shoulders stiffened on their own accord as you turned to the source of the voice. Chie's rubbed the back of her head sheepishly.

"Sorry, is it okay if I call you that? It kinda slipped out, hehe..."

"... It's fine, I guess." You answered. "What are you doing here?"

The girl noticed that you hadn't left the conversation there, and beamed. "I was training!"

"Training?" You echoed. She gave a enthusiastic nod in reply.

"Yeah! It's for- uh..." She blanked for a moment before grinning. "Um, y'know, because it's healthy and stuff!"

"So that's the kind of stuff you like..." You muttered more to yourself than to her. Still, she heard it as she sat down next to you.

She smiled. "Yep, then when I work up an appetite I head to Aiya's. You ever been there?"

After you shook your head, Chie looked at you in shock. "Wait, seriously? You have to go! Maybe we can head there when it's raining, you can try the rainy day special!"

You were curious as to what that was, but something else she said caught your attention. "'We'?"

"Well, yeah, so we can hang out!" Chie explained, before a soft frown formed on her face. "Is that no good?"

For reasons unknown to you, seeing her so sad made you feel regretful. "Th-That's not what I meant. It's just... Why?"

Chie looked at you, eyebrows raised quizzically. You sighed.

"Why do you keep talking to me? Even when I was cold to you, you still kept talking to me." You curled your fingers into frustrated fists. "Saying you want to hang out, too... If you're just faking it, then say so already."

Chie was stunned into silence, but answered quickly after. "Because I want to talk to you!"

It was you now who found they couldn't say anything, and so you allowed Chie to continue.

"I mean, it is true that you seemed like you didn't want to talk at first..." She chuckled a bit. "But we've been talking more since then, right?"

"That's... Just because you kept talking to me." You mumbled.

"True, but you've been asking me stuff too!" She grinned. "There's still a lot I want to know about you, and there's still a lot I haven't asked you. That's why I wanna hang out more, so we can be better friends!"

Slowly you looked up at her, uncertain. "Friends... Really?"

At her vigorous nod, you sighed. Truthfully you couldn't imagine Chie lying to you. "You don't think I'm weird, or something?"

"You mean 'cause of your clothes?" Chie guessed. Seeing your expression, she smiled reassuringly. "I did hear what other people said... But actually, I think it's pretty cool!"

"Seriously?" You asked in disbelief. Nobody had even said anything like that to you before.

Chie made an energetic fist, grinning at you. "Psh, yeah! You're like a awesome villain out of a TV show!" She then paused, looking worried. "Uh, well..."

Her comparison came out of left field, and before you knew it laughs were tumbling out before you could them. Even when you tried to muffle them from behind your hand, they could still be heard.

Chie gazed at you with surprised eyes, but a happy expression soon took over her face. You eventually managed to stop laughing, but still the smile remained on your lips.

"I've never heard anything like that before." You admitted. "But thanks. I guess that makes you the hero then, right?"

"Hehe, maybe! But I'll get us to join forces before you know it!" She answered, whole-heartedly. However to you, you could say she had already succeeded.
