As you sighed, a cool breath exited your lips. For once, you had some free time that wasn't took up by schoolwork or anything else, however now that you had it you didn't know what to do with yourself. Eventually your feet had led you here to Paulownia Mall, where you had been absentmindedly staring into the fountain for a while.
Despite the shiny, almost reflective waters in the decorative fountain, the ripples made it hold an unclear and shaky image. That why you were confused when a blurry picture of pink and red showed in the water. Puzzled, you squinted your eyes, when suddenly they were covered up.
It immediately clicked who it was, and you smiled to yourself, feigning confusion. "Who could this be? I have no idea!"
You heard a laugh in response, and the hands fell. You turned around to see your girlfriend, Minako.
"You always seem to know it's me." Minako said, mirroring the smile. "What're you doing here?"
"Of course." You replied before shrugging. "And not much. I'm having one of those days where I don't know what to do with myself, I guess."
An understanding look crossed her face when her ruby eyes lit up. "Then why don't we do something together? We can warm ourselves up at the café."
You were aboard as soon as the words left her mouth, but a part of you was uncertain. "Aren't you busy...?"
Holding out a reassuring hand, she shook her head with confidence. "I've one everything I have to. Besides, I'm never too busy for you!"
Even with the harsh coldness of the weather, it couldn't outdo the immense warmth on your face. You looked to the side, taking her hand. "W-Well, okay... Let's go then."
Minako let out another good-natured laugh, squeezing your hand. "Let's!"
Chagall Café's interior was as cosy as it was elegant, instantly bringing comfort to you. The staff there recognised Minako from her shifts, and soon enough you were led to your seats.
The two of you sipped your beverages, and over the rim of the cup you could see her staring back at you. You raised an eyebrow at her, her doing the same before you both had to muffle your laughs, trying to avoid spitting out your drinks.
"I don't know how you manage to do all you do." You admitted aloud after some time, the cups now half full.
Minako stayed silent, but her face showed that she was pondering what you meant.
"I just mean with school and stuff, y'know!" You explained. "But... You always look so tired."
"Are you trying to say something?" She asked jokingly.
You chuckled and shook your head. "I'm sure you're probably fine, but... Tell me if I can do anything to help, okay?"
An expression you couldn't quite pinpoint the meaning of was apparent on her features, but it was only for a moment before the corners of her lips turned up in a somewhat sad smile. "I'm fine, I promise."
"Really?" You asked to confirm.
She raised her head to face you head on, now sounding much more self-assured. "It's true I... Have a lot going on at the moment. I've been feeling a lot better though, since I'm with you."
You blushed again, averting your eyes to the table as you ran a hand through your hair. "Jeez, you're always catching me off-guard..." You glanced up at her. "But I'm glad."
"Me too." She replied softly. Truly she had been finding it hard keeping up a front for everyone, especially her team. Knowing what she did in the late winter months made it difficult to act the same as usual, as the future was unclear. However knowing that one thing will always be a consistency in her life brought her more comfort that could be explained - that being yourself.
"Anyway, what about you?" Minako questioned, taking a sip.
"Me? Ah, nothing really. A lot of people in my class have been acting weird... But Mr. Ekoda has been a pain as usual. I messed up on one sentence and he made me rewrite the whole things last week!"
Minako listened along, smiling contentedly at your enthusiastic tales. It was nice, just talking about simple things like this.
Time flew by, and before you knew it the café's customer amount had significantly lessened. Not only that, but the sky had grown darker, now a midnight blue that was accompanied by glowing street lamps.
After paying, Minako and you left, immediately feeling the chill as you were back out in the cold. She wrapped her scarf tighter around herself, pulling it up over her mouth.
Seeing that, you reached out to hold onto her hand. "Here. Not that my hands are any less cold, but-"
Minako closed her eyes, beaming from beneath her white scarf. "Thank you."
As her fingers began to intertwine with yours, you were already beginning to feel warm. "I-It's nothing."
The walk back to the dorm was quiet, other than the sounds of your footsteps against the pavements and hushed words that were exchanged every so often in the night air. As some point Minako had let go of your hand to instead hold onto your arm, keeping you near as if she was unsure you'd stay. You didn't mind it, simply holding her closer.
After what felt like too short of a time, you made it to the dorm. A dim lamppost was outside, illuminating Minako's face as she reluctantly let go and faced you.
"Well, I guess I should get going." You told her, goosebumps already forming in your arms once more.
"Yeah..."
You raised your hand in wave, turning your body away. "I'll see you later. Try get some rest if you ca-"
You cut yourself as you felt a tug on your coat. You turned backs round to see Minako with her arm outstretched, slowly letting go and letting her hand return to her side.
A meek smile formed on her lips, a pink tint covering her cheeks and ears. "Ah, sorry. I just..."
Understanding her silent sentiment, you stepped forward to hold her in your arms, speaking into her hair. "I'll come see you again, okay?"
She nodded, and you pulled back, meeting her gaze. Her eyes were gentle, similar to her hands that gripped on the sleeves over your coat. With her face in such proximity your sight ended up directed to her lips, and without thinking you leaned down and kissed her.
Not long after you became embarrassed, stumbling back so fast that you would've fell if not for Minako holding on to you.
"S... Sorry, I," you began to stammer, desperate to say something but not sure what exactly. "That was..."
"Unexpected." Minako finished for you, her smile bright. "But nice."
"Yeah." You agreed, scratching your cheek sheepishly. "Then can I...?"
There was no need for your sentence to be finished this time, as Minako reached up and was the one to kiss you instead.
