As you entered the familiar room, a sense of relief flooded through you. You loved the library, not for it's quietness since everything was silent for you anyways, but rather it was a place where you felt you could immediately understand people's words. Reading the contents of the books on the shelves brought you to unique worlds, ones that differed from your own.
With things like schoolwork and the like, you were able to follow along easily enough, however with the social side of things you found it harder. Not everyone knew sign language, and even if you were able to read lips, it was more trouble than it was worth sometimes with how difficult it could be.
So every moment of free time you had at school was spent at the library, diving yourself in fantasy worlds and stories. You were currently reaching up, feebly attempting to grab onto a book.
Despite your tries, you just weren't able to take the book from its position on the high shelf. You sighed disappointedly when an arm came into view.
Obviously in surprise as you had no idea someone was there, you were curious to see the Akira Kurusu, the student who transferred a couple months back.
It was easy to tell from the strange looks he was given as well as the forced distance the other classmates put between them and him that he wasn't well liked, but why exactly, you weren't sure.
You were even more puzzled as to why when he handed you the book. For a moment you just stared at him, to which he returned it. Then his lips moved.
Not being used to doing so in a while, it was tough for you to read his lips. At the very least though he seemed to be speaking clearly, and his hands had returned to his pockets instead of being near and blocking his mouth.
You squinted, then understood. He had asked if that was the book you were looking for. You nodded, clutching the book to your chest.
You were racking your mind for what to do. You wanted to thank him, but you weren't too confident in your voice, and you weren't sure of how to convey it without saying so either. What could you do...? You really didn't want to just leave it that.
What brought you out of your nervous thoughts was seeing a black cat's face on Akira's shoulder. At first you weren't sure if you were imagining it, but its bright blue eyes staring right at you were in fact real. And really cute, too!
Akira noticed your gazed directed at his shoulder, turning his head and calmly smiling. He had mouthed something again, but you didn't understand. Which brought you to stare at him with worried eyes, at a loss.
He raised an eyebrow, and the cat shifted again. A thoughtful look crossed his face as he fished his phone of his pocket, easily typing with one hand.
You watched him, puzzled until he showed you his phone screen. It was opened on a note, and words had been typed. A sentence directed at you.
"I'm guessing you can't hear me?"
You nodded with a frown, and he began to type again.
"Then we'll communicate with this." He put, pointing to the phone with his other hand. Once he saw you agree with another nod, he typed something else.
"What's your name? Mine is Akira Kurusu."
It took a moment for you to realise that he wanted you to take the phone, and so you clumsily readjusted your grip on the book, holding in under your arm as you took the phone into your hand.
"My name is Y/n L/n." You typed, soon adding, "Thank you for helping me with the book."
Akira read it, another small smile making its way on his lips. "No problem. It's a good one. You seem to like reading."
