"Hey Buck?" A nine year old Steve Rogers asks, glancing at his slightly taller, brown haired friend, Bucky Barnes. The boy looks over at him, a shining light in his eyes, as usual when he looked at the blond.
"Hmm?"
"I, uh, have something for you," Steve says shyly, reaching into his pocket. Bucky tilts his head a little as he watches him. Steve pulls out a small metal chain and on it rested a battered old dog tag. He carefully places it in Bucky's hand.
"Stevie..," Bucky says in a hushed voice, lifting it up to read it. Steve watches him anxiously, hoping he'd like it. The dog tag simply said 'Rogers and Barnes'.
"D'you like it? I figured it could be a promise," Steve explains shyly as Bucky slips the chain over his head. "So we can be together when we're older."
"I love it." Bucky beams and throws his arms around Steve, hugging him tight. Steve smiles and hugs him back.

"Stevie?" Bucky prompts, glancing at him. Steve looks up from where he was doodling on the sidewalk with some white chalk. "Are we in love?"
Steve seems to consider this for a moment. "I don't know," he answers finally. Bucky leans back on his elbows and looks up into the sky, thinking.
"'Cause I asked my ma about love and she said that love is caring about someone and just being there for them through whatever they go through," Bucky muses matter-of-factly; since he was only eleven years old, he didn't have the best idea of love, but it sounded good enough to him.
"Hmm," Steve hums, glancing over at him. "Well, I think so. I care about you, Buck."
"And I'd follow you anywhere," Bucky adds.
"Thanks." Steve smiles and Bucky smiles back shyly.
"My mom also said that... people kiss when they love each other," Bucky continues and Steve glances at him.
"Can we?" Steve asks and Bucky shrugs. He kisses Steve's cheek and both boys blush.

"Mom! Mom, I think I have a crush!" Steve shouts, running into his home, feeling lighter than air. It felt wonderful being with Bucky and this concept of love... It was amazing to the young boy and he wanted it to go on forever. He wanted to be with Bucky forever. He rounds the corner and nearly bumps into Sarah Rogers, his mother.
"What's that, honey?" she says distractedly, fixing her dirty blonde hair into a bun.
"I think I have a crush," Steve repeats slowly, but giddily. She looks at him and smiles tiredly.
"Who'd that be?"
Steve smiles as he slips his hand into his pocket and grabs the dog tag Bucky gave him that day. "Bucky," he hums and Sarah looks a little surprised.
"Bucky?" She repeats faintly, hoping she heard wrong. Steve nods in confirmation, slowly.
"Yeah. His ma told him about love and we figured that's what worked for us," Steve explains proudly, smiling up at his mother. She lowers herself down onto their couch and sighs softly then gestures for Steve to sit with her. He does so, a curious look on his face.
Over at the Barnes' house, Winifred, George and Bucky were all having the same conversation about why boys couldn't be with boys. It just wasn't right in their eyes.

Bucky met back with Steve at the park the following day.
Steve sits quietly, watching the ground. Bucky sat across from him, pulling at the strands of grass.
