So, guys, guess who requested another one shot? spideymanandloki again, so this was her idea. Let's do another then.
"Hey, Steve, think we'll catch anything?" Sam Wilson asks his friend Steve Rogers as the pair walk down to the lake. The two were only eleven years old and had been friends for five years. Well, more like family, because Steve had been raised with the Wilsons after his parents were killed, leaving him an orphan.
Steve, a blonde kid with large blue eyes and a thin, frail body, shrugs in response. He didn't talk much to people.
The pair sit on the edge of the lake and cast their fishing lines in. Sam moves the bucket of bait between them and leans back against a nearby tree, hands beneath his head as he waited for some action with the fish. Steve holds his steady and patiently, watching the water ripple and hearing the wind whistling by. He loved the outdoors.
An hour passes and Sam falls asleep, snoring lightly. Steve sighs and is just about to put his line down before it moves a little. It tugs in his hands and he holds the pole with a firm grasp, watching. It tugs again and Steve quickly reels whatever it is in.
He lifts up the line to see a small fish-man dangling on the edge, holding onto the sharp metal. Steve looks closer.
The fish-man thing was about four and a half inches tall; he was missing his left arm and his hair was long and brown. His tail was silvery-blue and shimmered in the sunlight. The merman was talking, too. Or trying to, at least, but all Steve could hear was high-pitched, bubbly, excitable squeaks. The blonde stares in amazement at him, eyes wide and full of wonder.
The fish-man coughs and shivers, he needed water. Suddenly his head falls to the side and Steve's eyes widen more. He dumps out the bait, fills the bucket with water then puts the merman into the bucket. He leans his head over and peers down into the bucket.
The merman was on the bottom, tail swishing slowly this way and that. He slowly got up and started to swim around, getting quicker and quicker with each circle. Steve watches, amazed. He glances over at Sam to see him still fast asleep.
"Wow." Steve whispers in awe. Eventually the merman slows to a stop and simply hovers in the water, looking around. He looks up and his green eyes widen when he sees Steve there. He looked like a giant to the small guy.
"Hi there." Steve whispers. He figured that since he was big, and that guy was small, that if he didn't want to burst his eardrums then he'd better keep pretty quiet. The merman pokes his head out of the water and tilts it to the side, looking at the blonde.
He squeaks gibberish and Steve watches him, frowning a little. The small man huffs and sinks back down into the water, swimming around again. Sam starts to wake and Steve looks over at him, he'd noticed the movement out of the corner of his eye. Sam sits up and, yawning, rubs his eyes with his fists.
"Catch anything, Steve?" He asks through a yawn, opening his eyes and looking at the blonde.
Steve nods wordlessly and gestures to the bait bucket. Sam comes over and peers into the bucket, and his eyes widen at what he sees.
"What is it?" He asks, looking at the blonde.
"A small merman?" Steve replies, shrugging a little. The merman makes a blurbing, bubbling sound under the water, swimming around quickly. Steve watches him quietly.
"You gonna keep him?" Sam asks and Steve nods a little. He puts a finger in the water and the merman swims up curiously, he wraps an arm around Steve's finger then looks up at him with big eyes. Steve smiles slightly and the merman smiles a little back, he was a really friendly creature.
"What's your name, little guy?" Steve asks quietly, watching him. Sam gets his pole and wanders off back home, Steve doesn't notice.
He squeaks loudly and Steve tries to think of what it could be.
"Uh, Pucky?" He tries, it sounded like something like that. The small merman shakes his head and repeats it slowly.
"Bucky?" Steve tries and the merman squeals, swimming around. He nods quickly and beams. He points with a tiny finger at the blonde.
"I'm Steve." The blonde replies and the merman considers this. He squeaks and it sounds like 'seev', but he had tried to say Steve. The blonde smiles.
He takes the merman home and makes sure he has plenty of food and water. He cares for Bucky and the two were the closest pair ever. Bucky couldn't speak much still, but they managed to communicate. Steve spoke mainly to Bucky, and Sam was glad that Steve had found a friend.
