Trigger warning: death and angst.

Bucky steps into the nursery when he hears little Annie wailing in her crib, waving her fat fists in the air restlessly. He soundlessly steps over, his steps sinking into the soft white carpet. He carefully picks her up and cradles her in his arms and gently rocks her back and forth. He was used to this by now, several months of having a baby helping him along the way. When he and Steve decided they wanted a baby, they adopted a small, sickly child whom the nurses feared wouldn't make it. But, months later, little Annie pulled through. She wasn't even a year old.
"Hey, hey, you're alright," he says softly, watching her. She blinks open her large brown eyes, spilling large tears down her face. Bucky closes his eyes and rocks her gently and begins to sing. It was a song he and Steve discovered in the new age, from a new Disney movie they had both enjoyed. "Come stop your crying, it'll be alright. Just take my hand, hold it tight. I will protect you from all around you, I will be here don't you cry," he sings lightly and she sniffles and curls into his chest.
Steve sits quietly up in bed, having woke from the lack of Bucky's presence. He quietly gets up and enters the nursery, smiling when he sees Bucky and Annie. The brunette doesn't notice him, however, his eyes fixed on their small daughter. Steve listens, quietly humming along to the song. Hearing him, Bucky raises his head, but simply smiles and continues singing.
"You'll be in my heart, no matter what they say. You'll be here in my heart, always," Bucky sings as he carefully lays Annie back down in her crib. She curls around her stuffed cat, peacefully silent. Steve smiles softly up at him and Bucky walks over.
"Hey," Steve hums and Bucky smiles. "Thanks for that."
"I know you need your oh so important beauty sleep," Bucky responds quietly with a grin. Steve smiles again then kisses him gently, cupping his cheek with one hand and the other resting on his hip. Bucky holds his hands against Steve's chest and kisses back slowly. He smiles a little into the kiss and Steve does as well.
"Alright, you should get some sleep," Steve says softly after pulling away. Bucky nods and steals another kiss before quietly walking off to their room. Steve checks on Annie and kisses her forehead lightly before joining Bucky once more. He climbs in and wraps his arms around the slightly smaller brunette beside him, and Bucky sighs contentedly. He takes Steve's hands within his own and closes his eyes.
"Love you, Steve," he murmurs sleepily and Steve hugs him a little closer.
"Love you too, Buck."

All went well for almost a year.
That is, until Bucky became sick. Really sick. Steve didn't know what was wrong with him, barely any of the doctor's knew. They of course did everything in their power to save him.
Bucky lies quietly in bed, a cold rag on his forehead. He was exhausted, his cheeks red, his eyes dim. The doctor walks out quietly and takes Steve to the side.
"I'm sorry, sir. He's extremely contagious, I cannot allow you to see him."
Steve stares at him. "No, no, I have to be with him. You don't understand," he says quickly, struggling to swallow. The doctor sighs sadly and shakes his head.
The two argue and it gets to the point where the doctor tries to physically restrain him from going in. Once Steve pushes past and bursts inside, he sees Bucky, eyes closed. He runs to his side and brushes his hair off of his forehead, begging him to wake. He holds onto him, tears welling in his eyes. The brunette doesn't make a move and Steve starts to cry.
Annie whimpers from where she and Nat were in the basement, watching Tarzan. She could clearly hear that her Daddy was crying. Nat hugs her close.
"Shh, darling, shh," she hushes, stroking her hair gently as tears drop silently onto her sleeve. "Your Daddy is just sad because your Papa left for a while, okay?" She whispers and Annie looks up at her. She was too innocent; Nat couldn't tell her the truth. And so they watch their movie, Annie peacefully oblivious and Nat clinging to the hope that she would remain that way.

Steve tries to keep a happy household after that. Annie was raised on the lie that Papa had a job; she was barely over one, anyway, and didn't understand any better.
The blonde groggily wakes to hear Annie crying. He steps into the nursery and soundlessly walks over to Annie. He carefully picks her up and slowly rocks her back and forth in his arms.
"Shh, you're okay, sweetheart," he hushes, rocking her gently. He swallows and remembers her favourite song; how could he forget?
"Come stop your crying, it'll be alright," he sings quietly, Annie twists and waves her fists. "Just take my hand, hold it tight. I will protect you from all around you. I will be here don't you cry," he sings, his voice growing shakier with each new verse. Annie looks up at him and blinks her big eyes. Steve tries to calm himself down, but he can't. Bucky was on his mind. It was too soon, he wanted him back. Before he knew it he was crying himself, his shoulders trembling. Annie looks confused and whines, hugging her Daddy close. Steve looks down and smiles shakily at her. "You'll be in my heart, no matter what they say. You'll be here in my heart. Always."
